Treatment of obesity through weight loss and reduced risk of weight regain
This medication is used in obese patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or more, or 27 kg/m² or more with risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. It aids in weight loss when combined with a low-calorie diet and helps reduce the risk of weight maintenance and regain. Thus, it is effective for obesity treatment and weight management.
The recommended dose of this medicine is 120 mg of orlistat orally 3 times daily, taken with a fat-containing meal or within 1 hour after a meal. Patients should continue a nutritionally balanced, mildly hypocaloric diet in which approximately 30 % of calories are derived from fat. Daily intake of fat, carbohydrates, and protein should be distributed evenly among three meals. This medicine may be omitted if a meal is skipped or contains no fat. Because this medicine may reduce the absorption of some fat-soluble vitamins and beta-carotene, patients are advised to take a multivitamin containing fat-soluble vitamins to ensure adequate nutrition. The vitamin supplement should be taken at least 2 hours before this medicine or at least 2 hours after it, such as at bedtime. Taking more than 120 mg per dose, 3 times daily, does not increase the effectiveness of this medicine. Based on measurements of fecal fat, the effect of this medicine appears 24 ∼ 48 hours after taking the medicine. After treatment is discontinued, fecal fat content usually returns to pretreatment levels within 48 ∼ 72 hours. The efficacy and safety of this medicine have not been evaluated for periods exceeding 4 years. ○ Studies have not been conducted in patients with hepatic and/or renal impairment, children under 12 years of age, or older adults.
This medication should not be used by patients with chronic malabsorption syndrome or complete biliary obstruction. Furthermore, individuals with an allergy to this drug or its components, women who are pregnant or might become pregnant, and women who are nursing should avoid this medication. If liver damage or signs of liver dysfunction occur, inform a doctor immediately, discontinue the medication, and undergo liver function testing. Patients with hyperoxaluria or calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis should use this medication cautiously. This medication may affect the gastrointestinal system causing symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, gas, constipation, and fatty stools, typically appearing within 3 months after starting treatment and most are temporary. However, some patients may experience these gastrointestinal symptoms for more than 6 months. There may be instances where treatment is discontinued due to adverse reactions during the use of this medication, with gastrointestinal symptoms being the most common reason for discontinuation. This medication can decrease the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and beta-carotene, so vitamin supplementation is recommended, ideally taken at least 2 hours before or after this medication. Taking this medication alongside a high-fat meal may increase gastrointestinal adverse reactions, so it's important to manage fat intake during meals. If any signs of liver dysfunction appear, alert a doctor right away and discontinue any suspected medications, including this one. For diabetic patients, weight loss due to this medication can improve blood sugar control, which may necessitate adjustments in blood sugar-lowering medications or insulin doses. Excessive weight loss can increase the risk of gallstones, so caution is advised. This medication may interact with other drugs, so patients taking cyclosporine, antiepileptics, anticoagulants, antiretrovirals, etc., should consult with their doctor. Pregnant or nursing women should avoid this medication for safety, and use in children is only recommended from 12 years of age. In case of overdose, 24-hour monitoring is necessary, and this medication's effects quickly recover. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored protected from light and moisture.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a sealed container to protect it from air, light, and moisture. Additionally, it is important to store it in a cool place at a temperature below 25 degrees Celsius to maintain its effectiveness.
