Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in controlling blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used alongside dietary and exercise therapy to help control blood sugar in adult patients with type 2 diabetes. It may be administered to those who have no prior experience with diabetes medication treatment or who find it difficult to control blood sugar with monotherapy. Additionally, it is used when monotherapy with Metformin is insufficient and can replace the combination therapy of Linagliptin and Metformin. In cases where blood sugar control is inadequate with Metformin in combination with sulfonylurea or insulin, this drug can be co-administered to enhance efficacy. If blood sugar remains uncontrolled even after combination therapy with empagliflozin and Metformin, this drug can be added for treatment. In summary, this medication is used to improve blood sugar control in various diabetic treatment situations.

Precautions

This medication may cause a serious side effect called lactic acidosis, so caution is required. It should not be used in patients with allergies to any of the components of this drug or in those with type 1 diabetes, lactic acidosis, or diabetic ketoacidosis. It should not be administered to patients with severely impaired kidney function or in situations where acute changes in kidney function may occur. Furthermore, patients with severe heart disease or liver dysfunction, acute alcohol intoxication, or very poor nutritional status should avoid using this drug. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are also advised not to use this medication. As this drug can cause hypoglycemia, it is essential to monitor blood sugar levels closely, especially when taken with insulin or sulfonylurea. To reduce the risk of lactic acidosis, regular kidney function tests are necessary; this medication should be temporarily discontinued during acute illnesses such as dehydration, severe infections, or trauma. If acute pancreatitis or skin blistering is experienced, immediate consultation with a doctor is required. This medication can lower vitamin B12 levels, therefore checking for vitamin B12 deficiency is necessary during long-term use. When used in conjunction with other drugs, interactions may occur, so it is important to inform the doctor or pharmacist and take caution. For those planning to become pregnant or who are pregnant, insulin therapy is recommended for blood sugar control instead of this drug. Safety in children under 10 years old and adolescents is not established, so it is preferable not to administer it. In elderly patients, there may be a decline in kidney function; hence, dosage adjustments and regular kidney function tests are necessary. In cases of overdose, lactic acidosis may occur and immediate medical attention should be sought; hemodialysis is an effective treatment method. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored away from moisture.
