Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • difficulty in blood sugar control
View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapy to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes in adults. Initially, adequate efficacy can be expected with monotherapy in patients with no prior experience of diabetes drug treatment. If the patient is already on a combination therapy of Linagliptin and Metformin, this medication can be substituted. Additionally, when blood sugar control is difficult with insulin and Metformin combination therapy, this medication can be administered together with insulin. When blood sugar is not controlled with the maximum dose of Metformin and Empagliflozin, blood sugar management can be improved through combination therapy of Empagliflozin and this medication. These various treatment options help provide effective blood sugar management tailored to the individual conditions of each patient.

Precautions

This medication is primarily used to control blood sugar. One of the ingredients in this medication can cause a serious condition known as lactic acidosis, so individuals with certain health conditions should not take this medication. For example, patients allergic to any of the components of this medication, those with type 1 diabetes, lactic acidosis, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe renal impairment, liver dysfunction, acute alcohol intoxication, pregnant women, and others should not take this medication. Furthermore, this medication should be avoided in cases of sudden deterioration in physical condition or severe heart and lung function decline. This medication can cause hypoglycemia, so care should be taken when used together with other hypoglycemic agents such as insulin or sulfonylureas, and dosages of other medications may need to be adjusted as necessary. Due to the risk of lactic acidosis, any suspicion of dehydration, infection, or renal impairment should be discussed with a physician immediately, and the use of this medication may be temporarily halted. As renal function is critical, regular renal function testing should be conducted before starting this medication and during treatment, and the medication should be discontinued if renal function declines. Special caution is also required for those with heart disease or those undergoing iodine contrast radiography. This medication may need to be discontinued for a certain period before and after surgery or radiological examinations. During treatment with this medication, rare side effects such as acute pancreatitis or bullous pemphigoid may occur, so report any severe abdominal pain or skin abnormalities to a doctor immediately. Prolonged use may lead to vitamin B12 deficiency, so vitamin B12 levels should be checked if symptoms such as anemia or neurological issues arise. This medication can interact with other medications, so it is crucial to inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medications. It is advisable to avoid the use of this medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and women who plan to become pregnant should also avoid taking this medication. This medication is not recommended for children under the age of 10 or adolescents aged 10 to 17, as its safety and efficacy have not been sufficiently established for this group. Elderly patients may have impaired renal function; hence, renal function should be checked before starting this medication and should be monitored regularly. In case of overdose, lactic acidosis may occur, requiring immediate medical treatment, and in some cases, the medication may need to be removed through hemodialysis. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and should be stored in a sealed container, avoiding moisture and not transferring to another container.
