This medication is used in adult patients with chronic constipation when relief of symptoms with laxatives is difficult.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is taken orally and can be administered at any time of the day, irrespective of meals. Adults should take 2 mg once daily. Patients aged 65 or older should start with 1 mg once daily, which may be increased to 2 mg once daily if needed. Patients with severe kidney impairment or severe liver impairment should take 1 mg once daily. Patients with mild to moderate kidney or liver impairment do not require dosage adjustment.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with allergies to the active ingredient or excipients. It should not be administered to patients with severely impaired kidney function who require dialysis. This medication is also not suitable for patients with bowel perforation or obstruction, or severe inflammatory bowel disease. Since this medication contains lactose, patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders should avoid taking it. In patients with severely diminished renal function, careful dosage reduction is required, and caution is advised in patients with severe comorbidities such as liver disease or cardiovascular disease. Patients with a history of arrhythmias or ischemic heart disease should be cautious when using this medication. It is recommended to reduce the dose in patients with severely impaired liver function. Caution is advised when using this medication concurrently with other drugs that may affect heart rate. Common gastrointestinal symptoms such as headache, abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea may occur after taking this medication, typically at the beginning of treatment, usually resolving over time. Symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, and palpitations have also been reported. It is important to consult a healthcare professional if any abnormal symptoms occur during the course of treatment. Severe diarrhea may decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, so it is advisable to use additional contraceptive methods. This medication has a low potential for drug interactions, but drug concentrations may change when taken together with certain medications, so consulting with a physician or pharmacist is necessary, especially when taken with drugs that may prolong the QT interval. Use during pregnancy is not recommended due to limited experience, and women of childbearing age should use effective contraceptive methods while taking it.
