Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood pressure in essential hypertension not controlled by monotherapy of telmisartan or amlodipine.

  • Essential hypertension
View approved original text

Essential hypertension is a condition marked by persistently elevated blood pressure that puts a burden on the cardiovascular system. If blood pressure is not adequately controlled by monotherapies of telmisartan or amlodipine, additional treatment may be necessary. This medication effectively regulates blood pressure in such situations and helps prevent cardiovascular complications. Therefore, this drug is used in cases of essential hypertension not controlled by monotherapy of telmisartan or amlodipine.

This medication may cause serious damage to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters, so it must be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. This medication should not be administered to individuals with known allergies to the active ingredients or similar substances, pregnant or potentially pregnant women, nursing mothers, individuals with severe liver or heart problems, severe hypotension, patients in cardiac shock, or those with unstable heart failure after acute myocardial infarction. Patients with impaired liver function or biliary tract obstruction, heart valve diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, renal artery stenosis, those undergoing dialysis, and the elderly should use this medication with extra caution. Common side effects such as dizziness or edema may occur when taking this medication, and in rare cases, serious side effects may arise, so it is crucial to promptly consult a physician if any abnormal symptoms appear. Taking this drug during pregnancy can lead to serious issues such as decreased fetal kidney function, reduced amniotic fluid, and delayed formation of the skull, therefore it should not be used if planning a pregnancy or if already pregnant. This medication can interact with other drugs, so it is essential to inform the healthcare provider of any ongoing medications, especially potassium supplements, diuretics, lithium, digoxin, and cardiovascular drugs. As an antihypertensive medication, caution is required to avoid excessively low blood pressure, and immediate action should be taken if symptoms of hypotension occur. This medication is not recommended for children due to insufficient evidence of safety and effectiveness.
