View approved original text

This medication is administered alongside dietary and exercise therapies to assist in blood sugar control for adults with type 2 diabetes. It is used in patients who have no prior experience with diabetes medication or have difficulty controlling blood sugar with metformin alone. Additionally, it is administered in combination with sulfonylurea when blood sugar control is difficult with either replacement therapy of linagliptin and metformin or maximum doses of metformin and sulfonylurea. If sufficient effect is not achieved with insulin and metformin combination therapy, it can be used alongside insulin, and it may also be added to combination therapy of metformin and empagliflozin. It is used to improve blood sugar control in various treatment situations.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious side effects such as lactic acidosis and requires careful monitoring. Lactic acidosis is a condition where there is an excessive accumulation of lactate in the blood, which can be harmful and requires prompt treatment. This drug should not be administered to patients with certain conditions or impaired kidney function. For example, patients with type 1 diabetes, severe kidney impairment, liver dysfunction, serious infections, or dehydration should not take this medication. It is also recommended that pregnant or breastfeeding women avoid using this medicine. This medication can cause hypoglycemia, so blood sugar levels should be monitored closely, especially when taken with other hypoglycemic agents. Kidney function is related to the excretion of this medicine, so regular kidney function tests should be conducted, and administration may need to be discontinued if kidney function declines. Patients with heart disease or a recent history of myocardial infarction should also use this drug with caution. During treatment, rare side effects such as acute pancreatitis or blistering dermatosis may occur, so patients should consult a physician immediately if related symptoms appear. Routine blood tests are necessary to monitor vitamin B12 levels, as prolonged use may lead to a decrease. Furthermore, this medication can interact with other drugs, so it is essential to inform a physician or pharmacist of any concurrent medications. If planning for pregnancy or already pregnant, alternative treatments should be considered, and avoidance during breastfeeding is recommended. It is not recommended for children under ten years of age or adolescents between the ages of ten and seventeen, as safety and efficacy have not been established. Elderly patients are at higher risk for renal impairment, so dosage adjustments and regular monitoring are necessary. In the event of overdose, the risk of lactic acidosis increases, necessitating immediate medical treatment and possibly blood dialysis. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, stored away from moisture, and not transferred to other containers.
