  • Type 2 Diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is mainly used as an adjunct to diet and exercise for blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone or in combination with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin if blood sugar improvement is insufficient. Additionally, patients with type 2 diabetes require nutritional counseling along with weight loss and regular exercise, which are crucial not only for the initial treatment but also for maintaining drug efficacy. Therefore, this medication is effectively used for improving blood sugar control and managing diabetes.

Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and needs insulin to lower blood sugar effectively. During the course of this medication, symptoms of heart failure may occur, such as sudden weight gain, shortness of breath, and swelling of the legs; if these symptoms arise, inform your doctor immediately. Patients with heart failure or a history of heart failure should not use this medication, nor should patients with active bladder cancer or a history of bladder cancer, or patients with severe liver or kidney dysfunction. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication, and premenopausal women may have a higher risk of pregnancy due to ovulation while on this medication, so appropriate contraception is necessary. The risk of hypoglycemia may increase when this medication is used with other diabetes medications; hence, symptoms of hypoglycemia and management strategies should be well understood and dosage adjustments may be needed for other medications. Regular liver function tests should be conducted during treatment, and if symptoms of liver dysfunction (fatigue, loss of appetite, pain in the upper right abdomen, jaundice, etc.) occur, consult a doctor immediately. Swelling or weight gain may occur, and these symptoms can improve upon discontinuation of the medication. Long-term use of this medication may increase the risk of fractures, so special attention to bone health is especially necessary for women. If visible blood in the urine or urination disorders occur during treatment, inform your doctor immediately as it may indicate the possibility of bladder cancer. This medication is taken once daily, and if a dose is missed, do not double the dose the next day. Safety and efficacy have not been established in children and adolescents under 18 years of age. Elderly patients need special attention, and those over 75 years old should use the medication with increased caution. This medication may interact with other drugs; therefore, inform your doctor or pharmacist of any other medications being taken.
