View approved original text

This medication helps lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. Additionally, it increases HDL cholesterol levels, thereby improving the balance of blood lipids. This therapeutic effect allows for more effective management of blood lipid levels when used in conjunction with dietary therapy. Therefore, it is actively used for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia.

How to take

Adult dose

The usual starting dose for adults is 1 to 2 mg of pitavastatin calcium taken once daily. If the LDL cholesterol-lowering effect is insufficient, the dose may be increased up to a maximum of 4 mg per day. The dose should be adjusted appropriately at intervals of at least 4 weeks based on treatment goals and patient response.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to certain patients. For example, it should not be used in patients who are allergic to any of its components, those with active liver disease, severe liver dysfunction, or biliary obstruction, and those currently taking cyclosporine. It should also be avoided in individuals with myopathy, pregnant or potentially pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children. Patients with lactose intolerance or allergies to soybean oil, soy, or peanuts should also exercise caution. When using this medication, special care should be taken in patients with impaired kidney function or a history of liver dysfunction, individuals who consume alcohol excessively, patients with hypothyroidism, and the elderly. Caution is especially warranted when taken concurrently with fibrates or nicotinic acid, as muscle-related side effects may occur. This medication can cause various adverse reactions such as muscle pain, weakness, impaired liver function, and allergic reactions. If muscle pain or weakness worsens, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician, and undergo regular liver function tests. Rarely, thrombocytopenia, neurological symptoms, gastrointestinal abnormalities, and changes in kidney function may occur; thus, careful monitoring is necessary. Since this medication is used for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, it is advisable to check blood lipid levels before administration and consider non-pharmacologic treatments such as diet and exercise therapy first. During treatment, regular monitoring of blood lipids and liver function is required to assess therapeutic efficacy and side effects. This medication may interact with certain drugs, increasing the risk of muscle damage and worsening kidney function when taken with cyclosporine, fibrates, nicotinic acid, or erythromycin. Therefore, caution is particularly necessary when co-administering these medications, and discontinuation should occur immediately if symptoms arise. Elderly patients are at an increased risk of side effects due to decreased physiological function, necessitating dosage adjustment and careful observation. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication due to potential harm to the fetus and newborn; if pregnancy is confirmed, the medication should be discontinued immediately. Safety and efficacy in children have not been established, and its use is not recommended.
