Treatment of essential hypertension and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication effectively controls blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension, helping to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It is particularly suitable for patients over 55 years of age who are at high risk for cardiovascular disease and cannot be given ACE inhibitors. These patients may include those with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, transient ischemic attack, or clinical evidence of end-organ damage in high-risk diabetes. This medication is used to reduce the risk of death from myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, it contributes to improving cardiovascular health and preventing serious complications.
For essential hypertension, Telmisartan should be taken orally at a dose of 40 mg once daily with water, regardless of meals. Depending on the patient, 20 mg once daily may be effective, and if needed, the dose may be increased to 80 mg once daily. Dose increases will show the maximum antihypertensive effect around 4 to 8 weeks after treatment initiation. For reduction of cardiovascular disease risk, it is recommended to take this medication at a dose of 80 mg once daily with water, regardless of meals. There is no known effect on the morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular diseases at doses less than 80 mg. When starting treatment for the purpose of reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, monitoring blood pressure is recommended, and appropriate adjustment of antihypertensive medications may be required.
