This medication is used for the treatment of essential hypertension. It also helps to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It is particularly effective in patients aged 55 years and older at high risk who cannot use ACE inhibitors, reducing the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death due to cardiovascular diseases. It is particularly recommended for patients with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, stroke, transient ischemic attacks, or evidence of organ damage from diabetes. It is used to reduce cardiovascular risk factors and improve health.

How to take

Adult dose

For essential hypertension, Telmisartan is to be taken orally 40 mg once daily with water, regardless of meals. Depending on the patient, 20 mg once daily may also be effective, and the dose can be increased to 80 mg once daily if necessary. The maximum antihypertensive effect is observed 4-8 weeks after increasing the dose. For the purpose of reducing cardiovascular disease risk, 80 mg once daily is recommended.

Precautions

This drug may have serious effects on the fetus during pregnancy, so treatment should be stopped immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. It should not be used in individuals with a known allergic reaction to this drug or its components, in pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients with severe liver impairment, or patients with hereditary angioedema. Caution is required when administering it to elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, liver dysfunction, or patients with heart and kidney diseases, as there is a risk of excessive lowering of blood pressure or worsening kidney function. During treatment with this drug, blood pressure, kidney function, and serum potassium levels should be regularly monitored, and any abnormal symptoms should be reported to a physician immediately. Serious side effects, such as angioedema, hyperkalemia, kidney dysfunction, liver dysfunction, shock, syncope, interstitial pneumonia, and rhabdomyolysis, may occur and should be carefully monitored. Interactions may arise if used with other antihypertensive medications or certain drugs, so inform your doctor of any other medications you are taking. This drug is not recommended for breastfeeding women or for children or adolescents under 18 years of age, as its safety and efficacy have not been established. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, tachycardia, dizziness, and acute renal failure may occur, necessitating immediate treatment. Store in a place out of reach of children, and to prevent moisture absorption, it is advisable to open the packaging just before taking the tablet. Caution is necessary while driving or operating machinery as there is a risk of syncope or dizziness. Patients with active gastrointestinal conditions should be particularly careful due to the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. Patients with low blood volume or sodium deficiency may experience symptoms of hypotension, so conditions should be corrected before administration. This drug may not be suitable for individuals with certain genetic conditions (fructose intolerance).
