Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in controlling blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used as monotherapy, but if it is not sufficient as initial therapy, it may be combined with metformin. If blood sugar control is difficult with existing monotherapies of metformin or sulfonylureas, this medication may be added for combination therapy. It can also be used to enhance the effect if blood sugar control is not adequate during insulin therapy. It is used together when blood sugar is not sufficiently controlled after combination therapy with sulfonylureas and metformin or empagliflozin and metformin. Overall, this medication is used to improve blood sugar control in various therapeutic situations.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with allergies to the active ingredient or other components. It is also safe not to take this medication in patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Caution is required for patients taking insulin or sulfonylureas that can induce hypoglycemia. In particular, if this medication is used in combination with insulin, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase, and dose adjustments may be necessary. Patients with heart failure should use this medication carefully and consult healthcare providers according to symptoms. If acute pancreatitis symptoms, such as severe abdominal pain, occur during treatment with this medication, it should be stopped immediately and a hospital visit is required. A skin disease called bullous pemphigoid may occur, so any blisters or skin irritation should be reported to a doctor immediately. Hypoglycemic symptoms may appear during the use of this medication, so one should be well informed about hypoglycemia. In clinical trials, patients taking this medication experienced adverse reactions at similar frequencies to those in the placebo group, including hypoglycemia, pancreatitis, and skin rashes. Pregnant or nursing women are advised against taking this medication, and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult healthcare providers. It is not recommended for children under 10 years of age and for children and adolescents aged 10-17 years as safety and efficacy have not been sufficiently established. It can be used in the elderly without dose adjustment, but patients with renal or hepatic dysfunction may also be administered without special dose adjustments. There is no specific antidote in case of overdose, so if necessary, the drug should be removed from the gastrointestinal tract, and symptoms should be monitored while receiving appropriate treatment. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and care should be taken as transferring it to another container may not be good for maintaining quality.
