Effectiveness in alleviating symptoms of gastric ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease, and treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection
This medication is used to alleviate the symptoms of ulcers in the stomach and duodenum and for long-term treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is also effective when taken with antibiotics in patients with gastrointestinal ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. It is utilized in the treatment of excessive gastric acid secretion diseases such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Overall, it is effective in treating gastrointestinal diseases and alleviating symptoms.
For adults, 10 mg of Rabeprazole Sodium is administered orally once a day. Depending on symptoms, 20 mg can be taken orally once a day. For gastric ulcers, treatment can continue for up to 8 weeks, and for duodenal ulcers, up to 6 weeks. For erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease, 10 mg or 20 mg is administered orally once a day for 4 to 8 weeks. If not resolved after 8 weeks of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), additional management may be required.
This medication should not be used in patients who are allergic to specific components or have a history of hypersensitivity reactions. Additionally, caution is needed when used with certain antibiotics due to the potential for allergic reactions. It is safe not to administer it to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Patients with poor liver function, elderly patients, or those with a history of drug allergies should be especially careful when using this medication. Discontinuation should be immediate if any allergic symptoms like skin rash or itching occur while taking this medication. Regular blood tests are recommended, as levels of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets may change. Liver function tests are also necessary, and the medication should be stopped if liver issues arise. Cardiac-related symptoms or neurological conditions such as headaches, dizziness, and insomnia have also been reported, so vigilance is required. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and nausea may occur. Various side effects including respiratory symptoms, muscle pain, joint pain, skin rashes, and vision changes may happen. Since this medication suppresses gastric acid secretion, prolonged use may increase the risk of fractures and cause electrolyte imbalances such as hypomagnesemia. There may also be a slightly increased risk of bacterial infection in the gastrointestinal tract, so consultation with a physician is advised if diarrhea persists. Attention should be taken when driving or operating machinery as drowsiness may occur. It may interact with other medications, so it is essential to inform about any current medications. Special caution should be exercised when combined with antibiotics or antiviral medications. This medication should be swallowed whole and not chewed or crushed, and it must be kept out of reach of children. When taken for an extended period, regular check-ups should be conducted, and the dosage and duration should be followed as per physician's instructions.
