This medication is used alongside dietary and exercise therapy to assist with blood sugar control in adults with Type 2 diabetes. It can be administered in cases where blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy, especially when there has been no prior experience with diabetes medication. Additionally, it can be used in combination with insulin when sufficient blood sugar control has not been achieved with insulin and metformin combination therapy, or to replace the combination of linagliptin and metformin. Furthermore, when blood sugar control is challenging with the maximum dose of metformin in combination with empagliflozin, it can be administered with empagliflozin to enhance blood sugar management. This medication aids in effective blood sugar control for the treatment of diabetes.

Precautions

This medication may cause a serious side effect known as lactic acidosis, so caution is required. Lactic acidosis is a rare but fatal metabolic complication that poses a risk, particularly to patients with poor kidney function or heart disease. It should not be administered to individuals allergic to its active ingredients or excipients, patients with Type 1 diabetes, those with severe renal impairment, or patients in acute infection or dehydration states. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also avoid using this medication. There is a risk of hypoglycemia; therefore, blood sugar needs to be carefully monitored when used together with insulin or sulfonylureas. Patients with impaired kidney function require regular monitoring of kidney function before and during the use of this medication. This medication should be discontinued before and after procedures using iodine-based contrast agents that can cause acute kidney injury. It is also safe to stop using this medication for a period before and after surgery. This medication may lead to pancreatitis and bullous pemphigoid; hence, if continuous severe abdominal pain or blistering skin occurs, immediate consultation with a doctor is necessary. Long-term use can lead to vitamin B12 deficiency, so checking blood levels of vitamin B12 is advisable. The efficacy of this medication may change when taken with other drugs, so all medications being taken should be disclosed to healthcare providers. Elderly patients are at a common risk of reduced kidney function, making dose adjustments and monitoring renal function important. In case of overdose, the risk of lactic acidosis is increased, necessitating immediate treatment at a hospital, and blood dialysis may be required. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in a place that avoids moisture.
