Improvement of blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is particularly administered in cases where blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy in individuals who have not previously experienced diabetes medication treatment. Additionally, it is used to substitute for the combination therapy of linagliptin and metformin, and may be administered together with insulin when the efficacy of the combination of insulin and metformin is insufficient. If blood sugar control is difficult even with the maximum dosage of metformin combined with empagliflozin, this medication can be used alongside empagliflozin. Thus, it is a medication that helps improve blood sugar control in various therapeutic settings.
The dosage of this medication should not exceed the maximum recommended doses of 2.5 mg of linagliptin and 1000 mg of metformin, considering each patient's current treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerability. This medication is administered twice daily with meals. 1. If you are not currently treated with metformin: Take 2.5/500 mg of this medication twice a day, one tablet at a time, and up to 2.5/1000 mg as needed for optimization.
This medication can cause a rare serious side effect known as lactic acidosis, thus it should not be administered to patients with impaired liver or kidney function or those with certain heart conditions. Moreover, individuals allergic to any of the ingredients in this medication, patients with type 1 diabetes, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and those with acute infections or dehydration should not use it. Due to the risk of hypoglycemia, careful monitoring of blood sugar is necessary when taken with insulin or sulfonylureas, and adjustment of medication dosage should be performed as needed. Patients with reduced kidney function or the elderly should have regular kidney function tests performed, and if kidney function falls below a certain standard, this medication should not be taken. In the case of acute illness, surgery, or planned radiologic contrast examinations, this medication should be temporarily discontinued, and it may be resumed after kidney function has returned to normal. If symptoms such as sudden abdominal pain, muscle weakness, or difficulty breathing occur while taking this medication, medical consultation should be sought immediately, as these may indicate serious side effects like lactic acidosis or pancreatitis. Additionally, if skin blisters or rashes occur, one should immediately notify healthcare providers and discontinue the medication. As vitamin B12 levels may decrease, regular blood tests to check vitamin B12 status are advisable during long-term use. This medication may interact with several other medications, so it is essential to inform your doctor or pharmacist about any other medications you are taking, especially those that may affect kidney function. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant are advised not to use this medication and should select other safe treatment methods for blood sugar control. Breastfeeding women should also avoid this medication, and it is not to be used in children under 10 years old. The elderly should initiate treatment with a lower dose due to the risk of reduced kidney function and require regular kidney function tests. In case of overdose, the risk of lactic acidosis increases greatly, so immediate medical treatment should be sought, and it may require blood dialysis. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, protected from moisture, and should not be transferred to another container.
