Treatment of obesity (weight loss and maintenance); reduction of the risk of weight regain
This medication is used for obese patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or for those with a BMI of 27 or higher who have risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidemia. It aids in reducing or maintaining weight when used in conjunction with a low-calorie diet. Additionally, it is effective in obesity treatment by reducing the risk of regaining weight. This medication is used to improve various health issues caused by obesity.
The recommended dose of this medicine is 120 mg of orlistat orally 3 times daily, taken with a fat-containing meal or within 1 hour after a meal. Patients should continue a nutritionally balanced, mildly low-calorie diet in which approximately 30 % of calories come from fat. Daily intake of fat, carbohydrates, and protein should be distributed evenly among three meals. This medicine may be omitted if a meal is skipped or if the meal contains no fat. Because this medicine may reduce the absorption of some fat-soluble vitamins and beta-carotene, patients are advised to take a multivitamin containing fat-soluble vitamins to ensure adequate nutritional intake. The vitamin supplement should be taken at least 2 hours before this medicine or at least 2 hours after it, such as at bedtime. Taking more than 120 mg of this medicine 3 times daily does not increase its effectiveness. Measurements of fecal fat indicate that the effect of this medicine appears 24 ∼ 48 hours after administration. After treatment is discontinued, fecal fat content generally returns to pretreatment levels within 48 ∼ 72 hours. The efficacy and safety of this medicine have not been evaluated for periods exceeding 4 years. Studies have not been conducted in patients with hepatic and/or renal impairment or in elderly patients.
Children under 12 years of age: Studies have not been conducted.
This medication should not be administered to patients with chronic malabsorption syndrome or to those with biliary obstruction. Patients allergic to this medication or its components should not use it. This medication should not be administered to women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, or those who are breastfeeding. If liver damage or symptoms of liver dysfunction occur, the patient must immediately inform their doctor and discontinue use, and should undergo liver function tests. Patients with hyperoxaluria or calcium oxalate kidney stones should use this medication with caution. This medication may frequently cause gastrointestinal side effects, which are related to how the medication works. Symptoms such as abdominal bloating, flatulence, diarrhea, fatty stools, increased bowel movements, or fecal incontinence may occur. These side effects are usually mild and temporary, appearing within 3 months of treatment initiation and tend to decrease over time. Rarely, serious liver damage such as hepatitis or liver failure has been reported, so liver health must be monitored closely. While using this medication, hypersensitivity reactions, including itching, rash, urticaria, angioedema, and respiratory distress, may occur; if these symptoms appear, treatment should be discontinued immediately. This medication may inhibit the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, therefore, it is recommended to take a multivitamin supplement containing vitamins A, D, E, K, and beta-carotene. Vitamin supplements should be taken at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking this medication. The co-administration of this medication with high-fat meals may increase gastrointestinal side effects, so it's important to control fat intake and to distribute it evenly across three meals a day. There is a risk of misuse of this medication in inappropriate patients such as those with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, so caution is advised. If taken with anticoagulants, blood coagulation status should be closely monitored, and if symptoms of liver dysfunction arise, the patient should consult a doctor immediately. This medication may interact with certain drugs, so it is necessary to consult with a doctor or pharmacist if taking other medications. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication, and its safety and efficacy in children under 12 years old have not been established. In case of overdose, 24-hour observation is required, and while severe side effects are rare, careful monitoring is necessary. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, protected from direct sunlight and moisture.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication must be protected from air, light, and moisture, so it should be stored in a tightly closed container. Additionally, it is important to store it in a cool place, maintaining a temperature below 25 degrees Celsius to preserve its efficacy.
