Treatment of obesity (weight loss and maintenance); reduction and prevention of the risk of weight regain
This medication is used in obese patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater, or in obesity patients with a BMI of 27 or greater and risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidemia. It assists in weight loss or maintenance when used in conjunction with a low-calorie diet and is effective in reducing the risk of weight regain. Thus, it plays an important role in the treatment of obesity and weight management.
The recommended dose of this medicine is 120 mg of orlistat orally 3 times daily, taken with a fat-containing meal or within 1 hour after a meal. Patients should continue a nutritionally balanced, mildly low-calorie diet in which approximately 30 % of calories come from fat. Daily intake of fat, carbohydrates, and protein should be distributed evenly among three meals. This medicine may be omitted if a meal is skipped or if the meal contains no fat. Because this medicine may reduce the absorption of some fat-soluble vitamins and beta-carotene, patients are advised to take a multivitamin containing fat-soluble vitamins to ensure adequate nutritional intake. The vitamin supplement should be taken at least 2 hours before this medicine or at least 2 hours after it, such as at bedtime. Taking more than 120 mg of this medicine 3 times daily does not increase its effectiveness. Measurements of fecal fat indicate that the effect of this medicine appears 24 ∼ 48 hours after administration. After treatment is discontinued, fecal fat content generally returns to pretreatment levels within 48 ∼ 72 hours. The efficacy and safety of this medicine have not been evaluated for periods exceeding 4 years. ○Studies have not been conducted in patients with hepatic and/or renal impairment or in elderly patients.
Studies have not been conducted in children under 12 years of age.
This medication should not be given to patients with chronic malabsorption syndrome or patients who have discontinued bile secretion, those with an allergic reaction to this medication or its components, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and nursing mothers. Liver damage has been reported rarely; therefore, if any signs of liver function abnormalities occur, you should immediately inform your doctor and discontinue this medication, and undergo liver function tests. Patients with hyperoxaluria or calcium oxalate kidney stones should exercise caution when taking this medication. This medication may frequently cause adverse reactions primarily related to the gastrointestinal system, and symptoms are generally mild and transient, but may persist in some patients for more than 6 months. If treatment is discontinued due to gastrointestinal adverse reactions, you should consult healthcare professionals if discomfort persists. Taking this medication with a high-fat meal may increase gastrointestinal adverse reactions, so it is important to control the intake of fat and distribute it evenly throughout meals. It may reduce the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and beta-carotene, so taking a multivitamin supplement is recommended, and vitamin supplements should be taken either 2 hours before or after taking this medication or at bedtime. Symptoms of liver function abnormalities (e.g., decreased appetite, itching, jaundice, changes in urine color, changes in stool color, right upper quadrant pain) should be reported to healthcare personnel immediately. For diabetic patients, weight loss with this medication may require adjustment of blood glucose control medications. Excessive weight loss may increase the risk of gallstones, so caution is advised. When taken in conjunction with anticoagulants, blood coagulation levels should be closely monitored, and since interactions may occur when taken with certain medications, discussion with healthcare professionals regarding currently taken medications is essential. This medication is not recommended during pregnancy and should not be taken while breastfeeding. Safety and efficacy in children under 12 years of age have not been established, thus it should not be used in that age group. There is insufficient clinical data regarding the elderly, so caution is warranted. In overdose situations, observation for 24 hours is necessary, and adverse reactions generally recover quickly. For storage, it should be kept out of reach of children, protected from light and moisture, and stored in its original packaging.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication is sensitive to air, light, and humidity, and should be stored in a tightly closed container. It should also be kept in a cool place below 25 degrees Celsius to maintain its efficacy.
