Treatment of obesity (weight loss and weight maintenance); prevention of weight regain
This medicine helps in weight loss or maintenance in patients with obesity who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or higher, or a BMI of 27 kg/m² or higher accompanied by risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidemia, along with a low-calorie diet. It is also effective in treating obesity by reducing the risk of weight regain.
○ Adults The recommended dose of this medicine is 120 mg of orlistat per dose, taken orally 3 times daily with a fat-containing meal or within 1 hour after a meal. Patients should continue a nutritionally balanced, mildly hypocaloric diet in which approximately 30 % of calories are derived from fat. Daily intake of fat, carbohydrates, and protein should be distributed evenly across three meals. This medicine may be omitted if a meal is missed or contains no fat. Because this medicine may reduce the absorption of some fat-soluble vitamins and beta-carotene, patients are advised to take a multivitamin containing fat-soluble vitamins to ensure adequate nutrition. The vitamin supplement should be taken at least 2 hours before this medicine or at least 2 hours after it, such as at bedtime. Taking more than 120 mg per dose, 3 times daily, does not increase the effectiveness of this medicine. According to measurements of fecal fat, the effect of this medicine appears 24 ∼ 48 hours after administration. After treatment is discontinued, fecal fat content generally returns to pretreatment levels within 48 ∼ 72 hours. The efficacy and safety of this medicine have not been evaluated for periods exceeding 4 years. ○ Studies have not been conducted in patients with hepatic and/or renal impairment, children under 12 years of age, or elderly patients.
This medication should not be used by patients with chronic malabsorption syndrome or who have ceased bile secretion. Individuals with known allergic reactions to this medication or its components should also avoid taking it. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and breastfeeding women should not take this medication. Patients with liver function problems or symptoms of liver damage should inform their doctor immediately and discontinue the medication. It is important to check liver enzyme levels with liver function tests. Additionally, patients with hyperoxaluria or calcium oxalate kidney stones should use this medication with caution. This medication may primarily cause adverse reactions in the gastrointestinal tract, with common reports including abdominal distension, flatulence, constipation, fatty stools, increased bowel movements, or fecal incontinence. These symptoms are usually mild and transient, occurring mostly within 3 months and tend to decrease over time. Discontinuation of this medication due to adverse reactions may occur, with gastrointestinal adverse reactions being the most common cause. Rarely, serious allergic reactions such as hepatitis or anaphylaxis have been reported; therefore, symptoms such as rash, itching, hives, or difficulty breathing should be reported to healthcare professionals immediately. This medication may reduce the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, K) and beta-carotene, therefore, it is recommended to take vitamin supplements. Vitamin supplements should be taken at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after this medication to avoid interference with absorption. Taking this medication with a high-fat meal may increase gastrointestinal adverse reactions; thus, it is advisable to spread fat intake evenly across three meals a day. Excessive fat intake should be avoided. Occasionally, interactions between this medication and certain drugs may occur, so consult with a doctor or pharmacist if taking other medications. Special caution is required when taken with cyclosporine, oral anticoagulants, antiepileptics, and antiretroviral drugs. Taking this medication during pregnancy is not recommended, and if breastfeeding, it should be avoided since it can be transmitted through breast milk. Safety and effectiveness have not been established in children under 12 years of age, and caution should be exercised in the elderly due to insufficient clinical data. In case of overdose, observation for 24 hours is necessary, and serious adverse effects are rarely observed. Finally, this medication should be stored out of reach of children and should be kept in packaging to protect it from light and moisture.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication is sensitive to air, light, and moisture; therefore, it should be stored in a special airtight container. Additionally, it should be stored in a cool place below 25 degrees to maintain its effectiveness.
