Improvement of symptoms and urinary flow in benign prostatic hyperplasia, reduction in the need for surgery
This medication improves the symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia, helping to reduce the enlarged prostate and facilitate urination. It also lowers the incidence of acute urinary retention, preventing sudden urinary issues and reducing the necessity for surgeries such as transurethral resection of the prostate or prostatectomy. Therefore, it is used to maintain prostate health and effectively alleviate related symptoms.
As Finasteride, take 5 mg orally once daily, with or without food. Even if symptoms improve, a minimum treatment duration of 6 months is required.
This medication should not be used by children or women. Particularly, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle broken pieces of this drug as it may pose a risk to male fetuses. While taking this medication, mood changes such as feelings of depression may occur, so if these symptoms arise, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional. Patients who have an allergy to this medication or are intolerant to lactose, soybean oil, or nuts should not use it. Patients with liver impairment or lipid metabolism issues should use this medication cautiously and regularly monitor blood lipid levels. This medication may have side effects related to sexual function, including erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, and ejaculatory disorders, but these symptoms are mostly temporary. There have been reports of male breast cancer associated with long-term use, but a direct correlation with this medication has not yet been established. There may be a slightly increased risk of prostate cancer while taking this medication, thus regular check-ups and monitoring of PSA levels are required. This medication has minimal interactions with other drugs, but it is important to inform healthcare providers if taking other medications concurrently. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication, as it may cause malformations in the genitals of male fetuses, hence caution is advised. Safety and efficacy in children have not been established, so it is not used in pediatric populations. Elderly patients can take this medication similarly to adults, but it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional before use. This medication may lower serum PSA levels, which should be considered during prostate cancer screening. There is no specific treatment for overdose, but it is essential to adhere to the recommended dosage.
