Efficacy & effects

Improvement of type 2 diabetes (blood sugar control)

  • Type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered as monotherapy, and if there is no improvement in blood sugar when used with other oral antidiabetic agents, it is co-administered with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin. Additionally, nutritional counseling, weight loss, and continuous exercise therapy should be performed, and these efforts are crucial not only for initial treatment but also to maintain the effectiveness of drug therapy. This medication is used to effectively improve blood sugar control in patients.

Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and will only lower blood sugar if insulin is present. This medication can put a burden on the heart, so patients with heart failure or a history of heart failure should not take it. During treatment, it is important to closely monitor for symptoms of heart failure such as shortness of breath, rapid weight gain, or swelling. Furthermore, this medication can cause fluid retention, potentially worsening swelling or heart failure, so it should be used cautiously in patients with heart disease or existing swelling. Patients with active bladder cancer or a history of bladder cancer should not take this medication, and if hematuria or urinary issues occur during treatment, a physician should be notified immediately. Patients with poor liver function or significantly impaired kidney function should avoid using this medication. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication, and premenopausal women should use adequate contraception as this medication may stimulate ovulation and increase the risk of pregnancy. This medication does not cause hypoglycemia when used alone, but there is an increased risk of hypoglycemia when taken with insulin or other antidiabetic agents, so caution is required. Side effects such as swelling, weight gain, headache, upper respiratory infections, muscle pain, etc., may occur; if these symptoms are severe or persistent, consult a physician. This medication can cause liver dysfunction, so regular liver function tests should be conducted before and during treatment, and if symptoms of liver damage (fatigue, loss of appetite, jaundice, etc.) appear, immediate medical attention should be sought. Elderly patients or those with diminished kidney function should use this medication cautiously, and in case of overdose, appropriate treatment should be provided based on the symptoms. Finally, this medication is not recommended for use in children and should be stored out of reach of children.
