Treatment of idiopathic Parkinson's disease
This medication is used for the treatment of idiopathic Parkinson's disease. Initially, it is administered as a monotherapy or adjunctively with dopamine agonists to relieve symptoms. Additionally, it assists in stabilizing symptoms in patients suffering from motor fluctuations (wearing-off phenomena) by supplementing levodopa treatment. Thus, this medication is effectively used to improve the main symptoms of Parkinson's disease.
This medicine is administered orally to adults once daily as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy. 1) Monotherapy or adjunctive therapy with a dopamine agonist: Administer 1mg orally once daily. 2) Adjunctive therapy with levodopa: The recommended initial dose for patients taking levodopa is 0.5mg once daily. If well tolerated and an adequate clinical response is not achieved, the dose may be increased to 1mg once daily. This medicine may be taken with or without food.
This medication should not be used in patients allergic to certain ingredients. Furthermore, co-administration with other MAO inhibitors or certain pain relievers and cough medications may cause serious side effects, so combination should be avoided. This medication should not be administered to patients with moderate or severe liver function impairment. Various side effects such as headache, dizziness, depression, skin rash, and dyspepsia may occur during treatment, so any unusual symptoms should be immediately discussed with a doctor. This medication may affect blood pressure, therefore, patients with hypertension or hypotension should be cautious when using it. Drowsiness or sudden sleepiness may occur while driving or operating machinery, so dangerous activities should be avoided if symptoms arise. If pregnant or breastfeeding, the use of this medication must be discussed with a doctor. Its safety in children has not been established, so it is advisable not to use it in this population.
