Treatment of obesity and prevention of weight regain
This medication is used for obese patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, or those with risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidemia with a BMI of 27 or more. It aids in weight loss or maintenance along with a low-calorie diet and is effective in reducing the risk of weight regain. This helps prevent and manage health issues related to obesity.
The recommended dose of this medication is 120mg of orlistat orally 3 times daily, taken with a meal containing fat or within 1 hour after a meal. Patients should continue a nutritionally balanced, mildly calorie-restricted diet in which approximately 30% of calories are derived from fat. Daily intake of fat, carbohydrates, and protein should be distributed evenly among three meals. This medication may be omitted if a meal is skipped or if a meal contains no fat. Because this medication may reduce the absorption of some fat-soluble vitamins and beta-carotene, patients are advised to take a multivitamin containing fat-soluble vitamins to ensure adequate nutrition. The vitamin supplement should be taken at least 2 hours before this medication or at least 2 hours after it, such as at bedtime. Taking more than 120mg of this medication 3 times daily does not increase its effectiveness.
Studies in children under 12 years of age have not been conducted.
This medication should not be used in patients with chronic malabsorption syndrome or complete biliary obstruction. Moreover, patients with known allergic reactions to this drug or its components, pregnant or potentially pregnant women, and nursing mothers should not take this medication. Due to the possibility of liver damage, patients with liver dysfunction or symptoms of liver impairment should immediately inform their doctor and discontinue use. Regular liver function tests to monitor liver enzyme levels are essential. Patients with hyperoxaluria or calcium oxalate kidney stones should exercise caution when taking this medication, as urinary oxalate excretion may increase. The most common side effects experienced with this medication involve gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, fatty stools, increased bowel movements, or fecal incontinence. These symptoms are generally mild and transient, most appearing within three months of treatment and decreasing over time. Serious liver damage such as hepatitis or liver failure can occur; therefore, consult medical personnel immediately if symptoms like jaundice, itching, urine discoloration, or abdominal pain appear. This drug can hinder the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins; thus, it is recommended to take a multivitamin supplement that includes vitamins A, D, E, K, and beta-carotene. Vitamin supplementation should be taken at least two hours before or after taking this medication for effectiveness. Taking this medication with a high-fat meal may increase gastrointestinal side effects; therefore, it is advisable to distribute fat intake evenly across three meals per day. It is safest for pregnant or nursing women to refrain from taking this medication, and its use is not recommended in children under age 12. During treatment, watch for signs of liver dysfunction, gastrointestinal symptoms, vitamin deficiency, and consult a doctor if unusual or severe symptoms persist. Additionally, this medication may interact with other drugs, so medical personnel should be informed, especially when taken with cyclosporine, anticoagulants, antiepileptics, antidepressants, and antipsychotics. In the case of overdose, no specific treatment is needed; however, it is advisable to monitor the patient for 24 hours.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
