This medication is used to treat essential hypertension. It also helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death due to cardiovascular disease in patients aged 55 years and older who are at high risk for major cardiovascular events. This medication is effective in patients with diabetes at high risk or a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, or stroke. Therefore, it plays an essential role in controlling blood pressure as well as protecting cardiovascular health. This medication is used for the prevention of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.

How to take

Adult dose

For essential hypertension, telmisartan 40 mg should be taken orally once daily with water, regardless of meals. It can be initiated at 20 mg once daily, increasing up to 80 mg if necessary. For the reduction of cardiovascular disease risk, the recommended dose is 80 mg taken orally once daily with water. Patients with liver dysfunction should not exceed 40 mg once daily.

Precautions

This medication can cause severe damage, especially to the fetus and newborn, during pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Individuals with allergies to this medication or its ingredients, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, patients with severe liver dysfunction, and those with certain genetic disorders should not take this medication. Elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, patients with weakened liver function, and those with valvular heart disease should take this medication cautiously under the guidance of a physician. Regular monitoring is required during the use of this medication, as there may be a risk of excessively low blood pressure and issues with kidney or liver function. If symptoms such as swelling of the face or lips or difficulty breathing occur while taking this medication, it should be discontinued immediately, and medical attention should be sought. Patients scheduled for surgery should refrain from taking this medication 24 hours prior to the procedure. Store this medication in a location inaccessible to children, and it is advisable to open the packaging just before taking the tablet.
