View approved original text

This medication helps prevent unwanted pregnancy when taken immediately after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure within 72 hours. It is important to take the emergency contraceptive promptly, and it is recommended to take it as soon as possible for effective pregnancy prevention. This medication is used as an immediate response after intercourse and does not replace regular contraceptive methods. Since side effects can vary by individual health status, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before taking. Proper use of emergency contraception significantly contributes to reducing the likelihood of pregnancy.

How to take

Adult dose

Levonorgestrel 1.5 mg should be taken orally as a single dose. It is recommended to take it as soon as possible after intercourse, preferably within 12 hours, but no later than 72 hours (3 days) after. If vomiting occurs within 3 hours of taking, the same dose should be taken immediately.

Precautions

This medication should be used temporarily as an emergency contraceptive and should not replace regular contraceptive methods. Since the emergency contraceptive cannot prevent all pregnancies, if menstruation is more than 5 days late or there is abnormal bleeding, one must verify pregnancy status. Individuals allergic to this drug or its components, pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, and those with severe liver disease should not use it. Additionally, individuals with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders should not take this medication. Patients at risk for ectopic pregnancy or those with a history of gastrointestinal, heart, or kidney diseases should use this medication with caution. After taking the medication, side effects such as dizziness, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, breast tenderness, menstrual delay or bleeding, and fatigue may occur, but most disappear within 48 hours. Precautions are necessary as skin hypersensitivity may occur. Thromboembolism can occur, so individuals with risk factors for thrombosis should be especially careful. This medication should only be used once within a menstrual cycle, and if the timing of intercourse is uncertain, its effectiveness may be reduced. After taking, non-hormonal contraceptive methods such as condoms must be used until the next menstrual period begins. It is ineffective after 72 hours post-intercourse, and should not be taken thereafter. Taking this drug in conjunction with medications that accelerate drug metabolism in the liver may reduce its effectiveness, so it should be avoided. Caution is especially necessary when combining with certain anticonvulsants, antibiotics, or herbal products. This medication should not be used during pregnancy, as taking it in early or mid-pregnancy may affect fetal genital development. If breastfeeding, it is recommended to refrain from nursing for at least 8 hours after taking this medication, as it may be transmitted through breast milk. Serious side effects have not been reported in cases of overdose, but nausea or bleeding may occur and should be treated appropriately based on symptoms. This medication should be stored in a tightly sealed container to prevent exposure to air or moisture. It is advisable to keep the storage temperature between 1 and 30 degrees Celsius to maintain the drug's effectiveness and safety.
