Efficacy & effects

  • Difficulty in blood sugar control in adult patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used to improve blood sugar control in adult patients with type 2 diabetes. It supports dietary and exercise regimens and is administered when blood sugar control is difficult on its own or when there is no previous experience with diabetes medication. Additionally, it is used in conjunction with metformin monotherapy or with metformin combined with other medications (sulfonylurea, insulin, empagliflozin) if blood sugar control is still insufficient. Thus, it effectively enhances blood sugar control in a variety of treatment combinations.

If not currently being treated with metformin: Take this medication 2.5/500 mg twice daily, 1 tablet at a time, with a maximum increase to 2.5/1000 mg twice daily, 1 tablet at a time. 2. Precautions

This medication may cause a rare complication known as lactic acidosis; therefore, it should not be used in patients with impaired kidney function or heart disease. Furthermore, it should not be administered to patients allergic to any component of this medication, those with type 1 diabetes, or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. When used with other diabetes medications that pose a risk of hypoglycemia, careful monitoring of blood sugar changes is necessary, and dosage adjustments may be needed. Elderly patients with reduced kidney function or those with acute illnesses should definitely consult their physician before taking this medication. If receiving iodine contrast agents used in radiographic examinations, it is necessary to discontinue this medication for a certain period before and after the examination and to check kidney function. Patients scheduled for surgery should stop this medication 48 hours prior to the procedure and resume taking it only after normal recovery of kidney function post-surgery. This medication may cause side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbances, abdominal pain, and diarrhea; if symptoms are severe, consulting a physician is advisable. There is a risk of Vitamin B12 deficiency, so patients on long-term use should regularly check their Vitamin B12 levels. If symptoms of acute pancreatitis or bullous pemphigoid appear, immediately discontinue use and inform healthcare professionals. Women planning to become pregnant or already pregnant should consider insulin therapy instead of this medication, and it is advisable for breastfeeding women to avoid this medication as well. It is not recommended for children and those under 10 years of age due to the lack of safety and efficacy data. In cases of overdose, serious side effects like lactic acidosis may occur, so it is crucial to adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage and to seek immediate medical attention in case of abnormal symptoms.
