This medication is used to assist patients with type 2 diabetes in controlling their blood sugar. It contains both linagliptin and metformin, making it particularly suitable for those who are combining dietary and exercise therapies. This helps in managing blood glucose levels more effectively. Improved blood sugar control can also have positive effects on the prevention of complications. Thus, this medication is useful for improving blood sugar management in patients with type 2 diabetes.
The dosage of this medication is determined based on each patient's condition, not exceeding 2.5 mg of linagliptin and 1000 mg of metformin 2 times a day. This medication is taken with meals, twice daily. 1. If not previously treated with metformin: Start with a dosage of 2.5/500 mg twice a day, one tablet at a time, and you may increase to 2.5/1000 mg twice a day, one tablet at a time.
This medication can potentially cause a serious side effect known as lactic acidosis and should not be administered to patients, particularly those with impaired renal function, or those with poor heart or liver function. Patients with allergies to the ingredients of this medication, those with type 1 diabetes, patients with acute myocardial infarction, and pregnant or breastfeeding women should also avoid using it. Caution should be exercised when using with medications that pose a risk of hypoglycemia, and blood glucose should be monitored closely. Adjustments to the dosages of such medications may be necessary. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include muscle cramps, abdominal pain, and severe fatigue; if these symptoms occur, consult a doctor immediately. In situations where renal function may vary, the use of this medication should be temporarily halted, and renal function should be reassessed, with regular kidney function tests being of utmost importance. Discontinuing this medication may be necessary around acute illness or pre-and post-surgery; it should only be resumed once renal function has returned to normal after surgery. This medication may induce rare skin diseases such as pancreatitis or bullous pemphigoid, so if sudden severe abdominal pain or skin blisters occur, medical personnel should be notified immediately. Long-term use may lead to vitamin B12 deficiency; if anemia or neurological symptoms are observed, vitamin B12 levels should be checked and supplementation provided if necessary. This medication can interact with other drugs, so patients must inform healthcare providers of all medications they are taking, especially if those medications may affect renal function. Pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant should not use this medication and should consider insulin therapy for blood sugar control. Breastfeeding women should also avoid using this medication and should consult about alternatives. It is advisable to avoid using this medication in children under 10 years of age, as safety and efficacy have not been established. Elderly patients are at a higher risk for declining renal function, so regular assessments of kidney function and dosage adjustments should be made when using this medication. In case of overdose, the risk of lactic acidosis increases; if symptoms arise, seek medical treatment immediately, and procedures such as dialysis may be necessary. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, protected from moisture, and should not be transferred to another container.
