Improvement of blood sugar control in Type 2 diabetes

View approved original text

This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in patients with Type 2 diabetes who are using both Linagliptin and Metformin.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is taken twice a day with meals. 1. If not previously treated with Metformin, the initial dose is one tablet of 2.5/500 mg taken twice daily, and it can be increased to one tablet of 2.5/1000 mg taken twice daily. 2. If blood sugar control is difficult with Metformin monotherapy, Linagliptin 2.5 mg taken twice daily and the existing dose of Metformin should be administered. 3. For patients switching from combination therapy of Linagliptin and Metformin, the existing doses of Linagliptin and Metformin should be taken at the start of this medication.

Precautions

This medication can cause a serious complication called lactic acidosis, and should not be administered to patients with impaired kidney function or liver function issues. Patients with allergies to any components of this medication, Type 1 diabetes, acute cardiac disease, or those with severe infections should also not use this medication. Pregnant or nursing women are advised not to take this medication, and those who are planning to become pregnant should consult a physician. Since this medication has a blood sugar-lowering effect, caution must be taken for symptoms of hypoglycemia when used in combination with other blood sugar-lowering agents, and dosages of other medications may need to be adjusted as necessary. Regular blood tests should be carried out to monitor kidney status in situations where there is a risk of kidney function decline, and the medication should be discontinued immediately if acute kidney impairment is suspected. If iodine contrast agents used in radiological examinations are administered, it is necessary to discontinue the medication for a certain period before and after the examination and to re-evaluate kidney function. During the use of this medication, symptoms such as gastrointestinal disorders, abdominal pain, and muscle weakness may occur, and a physician should be informed if these symptoms persist or worsen. Furthermore, this medication may lower vitamin B12 levels, so it is necessary to check vitamin B12 status through blood tests if used for long periods. If symptoms of rare skin or pancreatic conditions such as blistering dermatitis or acute pancreatitis occur, the medication should be stopped immediately, and medical consultation should follow. Elderly patients are at higher risk of decreased kidney function, so it is important to adjust the dosage of this medication and frequently check kidney function. While there is insufficient research regarding the effects on driving or machine operation, caution is needed as hypoglycemic symptoms may occur. Overdosage may lead to dangerous situations like lactic acidosis, so it is essential to adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage and visit a hospital immediately if there are any unusual symptoms. This medication should be stored in a tightly closed container away from moisture and out of reach of children, and it is advisable not to transfer it to another container.
