Reduction of risk for myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hypercholesterolemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with cardiovascular disease risk factors and patients with type 2 diabetes. It is also effective in reducing the risk of hospitalization due to non-fatal myocardial infarction, stroke, angina, and congestive heart failure. In patients with hyperlipidemia, it is used to lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels while increasing HDL cholesterol. This drug assists in the treatment of various dyslipidemias, including familial hypercholesterolemia. It is also effectively used in young children at high cardiovascular risk due to hypercholesterolemia. Overall, this medication is used for the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases and hyperlipidemia.
The recommended initial dose for treating hyperlipidemia is 10mg once daily; however, if more significant LDL cholesterol reduction is needed, it may be initiated at 20mg or 40mg once daily. The administration dosage should be individualized within a range of 10mg to 80mg once daily, adjusting based on therapeutic goals and response after analyzing lipid levels 2-4 weeks later. The goal of treatment is to reduce LDL cholesterol levels; monitoring should use LDL cholesterol during treatment initiation and evaluation. However, if LDL cholesterol cannot be measured, total cholesterol should be used to monitor treatment response. For patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the dosage is 10mg to 80mg once daily, either in conjunction with other lipid-lowering treatments (e.g., LDL apheresis) or when such therapies are not possible.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10-17 years) is 10mg once daily, with a maximum recommended dose of 20mg once daily. The dosage should be adjusted according to therapeutic goals and should occur every 4 weeks.

Regular liver function tests are important as symptoms of liver dysfunction may occur during treatment with this medication. Patients with a history of excessive alcohol use or liver disease should use this medication cautiously. Elderly patients are at higher risk for muscle-related side effects and should exercise caution during use. Although this medication is used to lower cholesterol levels, it may increase blood glucose levels, so patients with diabetes risk should closely monitor their blood sugar. If symptoms such as sudden muscle pain, weakness, or fever occur while taking this medication, notify medical personnel immediately. Taking this medication with grapefruit juice may increase blood concentration, so it is advisable to avoid grapefruit juice consumption. Women of childbearing age should use appropriate contraception while on this medication, and if pregnancy occurs, discontinue use immediately.
