Reduction of cholesterol and lipid levels in primary hypercholesterolemia (familial) and sitosterolemia to inhibit the risk of cardiovascular disease
This medicine helps lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia. Additionally, it is used as an adjunct to diet to reduce total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and non-HDL cholesterol levels in patients with mixed dyslipidemia. For patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, it is administered in combination with other treatments or along with statins when other therapies are not effective. It is also used as a dietary adjunct to reduce sitosterol and campesterol levels in patients with homozygous sitosterolemia. This medicine is used alongside an appropriate diet, and it is recommended for patients who do not respond adequately to diet or non-pharmacological treatments. The lipid levels should be closely monitored according to the patient's condition, and it may be combined with treatment for other underlying conditions if necessary. Therefore, this medicine is used to improve hypercholesterolemia and sitosterolemia.
The recommended dosage for this medicine is 10 mg once a day, taken regardless of meals. When co-administered with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, initiate treatment with this medicine at the recommended starting dosage of the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, and if the patient is already receiving high doses of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, continue administering this medicine while maintaining the dose of the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor. This medicine is generally safe, but side effects such as headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue, and muscle pain may occur. In particular, if taken with certain lipid-lowering agents, liver enzyme levels may rise, requiring regular liver function tests. Symptoms like muscle pain or weakness should be reported to a doctor immediately, and in severe cases, drug use should be discontinued. Patients with reduced kidney function can use this medicine, but caution is needed even though no dosage adjustments are required.
