Improvement of symptoms and urinary flow of benign prostatic hyperplasia, reduction of the need for surgery.
This medication helps improve the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia by reducing the enlarged prostate, thereby improving urinary flow. It also decreases the frequency of acute urinary retention, alleviating discomfort and reducing the likelihood of requiring surgeries such as transurethral resection of the prostate or prostatectomy. Overall, it is effective in alleviating symptoms and complications associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Take 5 mg of finasteride orally once a day, regardless of meals. Even if symptoms improve, a minimum treatment duration of 6 months is required.
This medication should not be used in children and women. Particularly, pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should avoid handling broken or crushed pieces of this medication. Depression or mood changes may occur during treatment with this medication; if such symptoms appear, consult a healthcare professional immediately. Patients with hypersensitivity reactions to this medication or certain genetic lactose intolerance disorders, or those with allergies to soybean oil, beans, or peanuts should not use this medication. Patients with liver dysfunction or dyslipidemia, including diabetic dyslipidemia, should use this medication with caution. In general, this medication has good tolerability, but sexual side effects may occur, including erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, and ejaculation disorders. There have been reports of association with male breast cancer after long-term use, but a clear causal relationship with this medication has not been established. This medication may not produce immediate effects, so if symptoms are severe, tests for other causes may be required. Before starting treatment, tests to confirm conditions such as prostate cancer, infections, or other diseases that can cause similar symptoms should be conducted, and regular monitoring of the condition should continue during treatment. While taking this medication, there may be a reduction in ejaculate volume; however, this generally does not have a significant impact on sexual function, although erectile dysfunction and decreased libido may accompany it. This medication may lower certain prostate cancer marker levels in the blood, so caution is needed when interpreting laboratory results. If taken by pregnant women, it may cause congenital abnormalities of the male fetus's reproductive system, and thus pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should not handle this medication. It is not recommended for breastfeeding women, as it is unclear whether this drug is secreted in breast milk. Safety and efficacy in children have not been established, so it should not be used in pediatric patients. Elderly patients can use this medication without special dosage adjustments; however, interactions with other drugs are not known. There is no specific antidote for overdose, so adhering to the recommended dosage is important. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and transferring it to another container is not advisable for quality maintenance.
