View approved original text

This medication helps to improve the symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia. The enlarged prostatic tissue shrinks, facilitating smooth urinary flow and potentially reducing the incidence of acute urinary retention. Additionally, it's used to decrease the necessity for surgeries like transurethral resection of the prostate or prostatectomy, thereby helping to enhance the quality of life of patients.

How to take

Adult dose

As finasteride, take 5 mg orally once daily regardless of meals. Treatment for at least 6 months is necessary even if symptoms improve.

Precautions

This medication should not be used by children or women. In particular, pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should not handle broken pieces of this medication. This is because it may affect the external genitalia of male fetuses. Mental side effects such as mood changes or depression may occur, so if such symptoms arise, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional. Individuals who are allergic to this medication or have genetic issues like lactose intolerance should not take it. Patients with liver problems should use this medication cautiously. Generally, this medication has few side effects and is well tolerated, but issues with sexual function or breast-related abnormal symptoms may occur. Rare reports of breast cancer have been noted with long-term use, but a clear causal relationship has not yet been established. This medication may affect the risk of prostate cancer, so especially men over 55 should have regular check-ups and consultations with their doctors. This medication interacts little with other medications, making it safe to take with most medicines. Pregnant or nursing women should not use this medication, as it may pose risks to the fetus if taken during pregnancy. Safety and efficacy have not been established for use in children. Elderly patients can take it just like other adults without needing special dosage adjustments. This medication can lower prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, so caution is necessary when interpreting PSA test results. There are no specific antidotes for overdosing, and reported side effects are rare. Keep out of the reach of children and do not transfer the medication to another container.
