Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It may be administered alone during initial treatment, and if blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy, it can be combined with metformin. Additionally, when monotherapy with metformin or sulfonylureas is ineffective, this medication can be added to insulin therapy, or used when sulfonylureas and metformin combinations are insufficient. If blood sugar control remains inadequate with empagliflozin and metformin combination therapy, this medication can be used together to enhance therapeutic effect. Overall, this medication helps improve blood sugar control in various monotherapy or combination therapy situations.
The recommended dosage for this medication is 5 mg once daily. It can be taken regardless of meals.
This medication should not be used in patients who have an allergic reaction to either the active ingredient or other components. It is not safe to administer this drug to patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. When used with insulin or sulfonylureas that may induce hypoglycemia, the risk of low blood sugar may increase, requiring dose adjustment. For patients with mild to moderate heart failure, caution should be exercised during administration, and it is not recommended for severe heart failure patients. During treatment with this medication, acute pancreatitis may occur; thus, if severe abdominal pain or related symptoms arise, immediate cessation of the drug and consultation with a physician are necessary. Bullous skin conditions such as pemphigoid may occur; therefore, if blisters or dermatitis develop on the skin, medical personnel should be notified immediately, and cessation of the drug may be required if necessary. While this medication is generally safe, it can cause side effects such as hypoglycemia, gastrointestinal disturbances, and skin rashes, so consultation with a physician is advisable if symptoms occur. Use during pregnancy or lactation is discouraged, particularly during breastfeeding, which requires special caution. It is not recommended for children under 10 years of age, and careful consideration should be given to the safety and efficacy when administered to adolescents over 10 years old. Elderly patients can use it without special dose adjustments, but those with severely diminished renal or hepatic function generally do not require dose adjustments. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so appropriate treatment and monitoring per symptoms are necessary. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and it is best not to transfer it to other containers to maintain quality.
