Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood pressure control in essential hypertension

  • Essential hypertension
View approved original text

Amlodipine or olmesartan medoxomil is used when blood pressure is not adequately controlled with monotherapy in patients with essential hypertension. These medications dilate blood vessels to lower blood pressure and reduce the burden on the heart. Therefore, they help to decrease the risk of cardiovascular complications due to hypertension. They can stabilize patients' health conditions by improving blood pressure control. This medication is used to effectively treat essential hypertension.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm or death to the fetus and newborn if taken during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. It should not be used in patients who are allergic to any of the active substances or similar ingredients, in pregnant or breastfeeding women, or in patients with severe liver disease or certain heart and kidney diseases. Patients with fluid or salt depletion, or with hypotension may experience initial hypotension after starting the medication; therefore, careful monitoring of their condition is necessary. Patients with severe aortic stenosis should be particularly cautious because rapid vasodilation could lead to hypotension. Patients with severe obstructive coronary artery disease may have an increased risk of angina or myocardial infarction while taking this medication, so caution is advised. In patients with heart failure, this medication should be administered very carefully, as worsening of kidney function could occur in patients sensitive to the drug. In patients with reduced liver function, metabolism of this medication may slow down; hence, dose adjustments and careful monitoring are needed. While taking this medication, various side effects such as dizziness, headache, drowsiness, hypotension, swelling, etc. may occur; if any unusual symptoms arise, contact a doctor immediately. Particularly, potassium levels may increase in the blood; therefore, when taken with other medications that can affect potassium levels, regular blood tests should be done. This medication can enhance its blood pressure-lowering effect when taken with grapefruit juice, so it is advisable to avoid grapefruit juice. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid taking this medication; if breastfeeding, they should either stop breastfeeding or discontinue the medication. It is not recommended for children under 18 years of age, as safety and efficacy have not been established. In elderly patients, considering diminished kidney and liver function, start with a low dose and closely monitor their condition. In case of overdose, severe hypotension and tachycardia due to vasodilation can occur, requiring immediate medical attention. This medication should be stored away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight, and kept out of reach of children.
