View approved original text

This medication is used to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be given alone to patients who are starting diabetes treatment for the first time, and if blood sugar control is insufficient, it can be used in combination with metformin. It can also be administered in combination when monotherapy with metformin or sulfonylureas is ineffective. If a patient is on insulin therapy and blood sugar control is still not adequate, this medication can be added. When blood sugar control is difficult even with a combination of several diabetes medications, this medication can be given to improve blood sugar control.
