This medication is used to effectively control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. Additionally, it helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and mortality from cardiovascular diseases in patients aged 55 years and older who have a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, or those with high-risk diabetes. It is particularly recommended as an alternative treatment option for patients who cannot use ACE inhibitors, thereby preventing the occurrence and complications of cardiovascular disease and improving the overall health status of patients. Therefore, it is effectively used for blood pressure management and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk.

How to take

Adult dose

For essential hypertension, Telmisartan should be administered orally at a dose of 40 mg once daily with water, regardless of meal time. If needed, a dose of 20 mg once daily may also be effective, and the dose can be increased to a maximum of 80 mg once daily. To reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, it is recommended to take 80 mg once daily with water. Patients with liver impairment should not exceed a dose of 40 mg once daily.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus during pregnancy, so it must be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, should not take this medication. Patients with severely impaired liver function or problems with bile excretion should not use this medication. Patients with hypersensitivity or a history of certain angioedema should also refrain from taking this medication. Diabetic patients or those with severe kidney impairment should avoid concomitant use of this medication with certain drugs. Elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, and patients with slightly impaired liver function should use this medication with caution. Patients with heart disease or gastrointestinal disorders also require careful monitoring. When taking this medication, various adverse reactions such as infection, blood pressure decrease, kidney dysfunction, liver function abnormalities, and allergic reactions may occur, so careful observation is required. If symptoms of angioedema, hyperkalemia, or worsening kidney function occur, treatment must be stopped immediately and appropriate medical attention sought. This medication may interact with other antihypertensives when taken concurrently, so it should not be taken with other medications without consulting a physician. Patients with impaired kidney function should have their potassium and creatinine levels checked regularly through blood tests. Patients with decreased blood volume or those taking diuretics should be cautious of hypotension. It is advisable to discontinue this medication 24 hours before surgery. Dizziness or fainting may occur when driving or operating machinery, so caution is advised. It is not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years old as safety and efficacy have not been established. In case of overdose, symptoms like hypotension, dizziness, and renal failure may occur, necessitating immediate medical attention. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and the package should not be opened until right before usage.
