Osteoporosis occurring in postmenopausal women is a disease characterized by reduced bone density, leading to an increased risk of fractures. This medication helps maintain bone density in postmenopausal women and prevents their bones from becoming weak. It is also effective in treating already existing osteoporosis. It plays an important role in reducing fracture risk and maintaining healthy bones. Therefore, it is used for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

How to take

Adult dose

Administer 150 mg orally once a month as Risedronate Sodium. Since food interferes with the absorption of this medication, it should be taken at least 30 minutes before consuming any foods or beverages other than water for optimal absorption. The medication should be taken upright with a sufficient amount of plain water (170 to 230 mL). It should not be chewed or sucked, and the patient must not lie down for at least 30 minutes after administration.

Precautions

This medication may irritate the gastric mucosa, so patients with esophageal or gastric diseases should exercise caution. Symptoms such as dysphagia, retrosternal pain, and heartburn may occur, and if these symptoms develop, the medication should be discontinued immediately and a physician consulted. It should be taken with a sufficient amount of water and the patient should not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it. This medication should not be used by patients with certain esophageal conditions, hypocalcemia, or severely impaired kidney function, as well as by pregnant and nursing women. Additionally, it should not be administered to patients with lactose intolerance. This medication contains the dye Yellow No. 5, and caution should be exercised if there is an allergy to this ingredient. Rarely, severe side effects such as osteonecrosis of the jaw and atypical femoral fractures may occur with long-term use, therefore regular check-ups are necessary. The absorption can be impaired if taken with supplements or antacids containing calcium, magnesium, iron, etc., so an interval should be observed. Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should avoid taking it, and nursing mothers should also discontinue taking or nursing. The safety and efficacy in children have not been established, and elderly patients do not require special caution. In the event of an overdose, calcium levels may drop, necessitating immediate medical assistance, and gastric lavage or calcium supplementation may be required. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and should not be transferred to another container.
