This medication is used to treat male pattern hair loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia, in adult males aged between 18 and 41 years. It helps improve hair loss symptoms and restore hair health.

How to take

Adult dose

Typically, finasteride is taken orally once daily at a dosage of 1 mg, regardless of meals. It is generally necessary to take it for at least 3 months to see therapeutic effects, and patients are encouraged to continue taking it to maintain the therapeutic effects. The treatment duration and efficacy must be evaluated continuously. Once discontinued, the therapeutic effects will disappear within 12 months.

Precautions

This medication should not be used by children or women. In particular, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle broken pieces of this medication as it may pose a risk to male fetuses. Depressive symptoms or mood changes may occur during treatment with this medication; if such symptoms arise, it is important to consult a healthcare professional immediately. Pregnant women or women of childbearing potential must not take this medication, nor should those who have hypersensitivity to this drug or certain genetic metabolic disorders. Patients with liver function problems should exercise caution when taking this medication. Side effects related to sexual function, such as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculatory dysfunction, may occur with the use of this medication, but these symptoms mostly recover after discontinuation of the drug. Additionally, long-term use of this medication has been reported to cause unusual reactions such as breast tenderness or enlargement, and testicular pain. It is essential to notify a doctor immediately if changes such as lumps or pain in the breasts or nipple discharge occur while taking this medication. Although the ejaculate volume may decrease, normal sexual function is not interrupted; however, erectile dysfunction or decreased libido may occur. This medication may increase the risk of high-grade prostate cancer; therefore, regular examinations and following a doctor’s instructions are necessary. This medication has minimal interactions with other drugs, but if you are taking other medications, you must inform your doctor or pharmacist. Animal studies during pregnancy have reported abnormalities in the reproductive organs of male fetuses; consequently, pregnant women must not take this medication. This medication is not administered to breastfeeding women, and safety and efficacy have not been established in pediatric patients. No dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients; however, caution is advised due to a lack of studies on efficacy. When taking this medication, PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) levels may decrease in blood tests, so care should be taken when interpreting test results. There are no specific antidotes for overdose, but serious adverse reactions have rarely been reported even with high doses in clinical trials. Keep out of reach of children, and it is advisable not to transfer the medication to other containers. Although there was no specific evidence of tumor induction in carcinogenic studies, caution is recommended for long-term use as it may affect the reproductive system in some animal studies.
