This medication is an emergency contraceptive that prevents pregnancy when taken within 72 hours after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure. It effectively prevents unwanted pregnancy when used immediately.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

As Levonorgestrel, take 1.5 mg orally at once. The sooner it is taken after intercourse, the higher the effectiveness. Take it as soon as possible (recommended within 12 hours) after unprotected intercourse, but no later than within 72 hours (3 days). If vomiting occurs within 3 hours after taking it, take another 1.5 mg of Levonorgestrel immediately.

Precautions

This medication is used temporarily as an emergency contraceptive to prevent pregnancy. It should not be used as a substitute for regular contraceptive methods. Even if this medication is taken, it does not guarantee pregnancy prevention in all cases; if menstruation is delayed by more than 5 days, there is abnormal bleeding, or pregnancy symptoms are suspected, a pregnancy test must be taken. This medication should not be administered to individuals with allergies to this medication or its components, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, patients with severe liver disease, and patients with certain hereditary lactose-related conditions. Patients at risk of ectopic pregnancy, those with serious digestive disorders, and those with a history of heart or kidney disease should use this medication with caution. In such cases, symptoms may worsen, and care must be taken. Possible side effects include dizziness, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, breast tenderness, menstrual delay or bleeding, vomiting, and fatigue, most of which resolve within 48 hours. Some patients may experience skin hypersensitivity reactions or thrombosis, so caution is needed. This medication should be used only once per menstrual cycle, and if there is uncertainty about the timing of intercourse or if additional sexual activity occurs, complete effectiveness is difficult to expect. Non-hormonal contraceptive methods such as condoms or spermicide should be used together until the next menstruation begins. The effect of this medication decreases after 72 hours following intercourse, so it is best not to take it after this period, and care should be taken as the possibility of pregnancy exists with additional intercourse after taking the medication. This medication does not prevent sexually transmitted infections, so separate measures are necessary for STI prevention. If this medication is taken with drugs that promote metabolism in the liver, its effectiveness may be reduced; therefore, consult a physician if such medications are being taken. This medication should not be used during pregnancy, and if breastfeeding, it is recommended to suspend breastfeeding for at least 8 hours after taking it. In case of overdose, nausea or bleeding may occur; however, no serious side effects have been reported and treatment should follow the symptoms. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, stored away from direct sunlight, and maintained in its original packaging.
