This medication is effective in managing essential hypertension and is used to stabilize blood pressure. It also helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It can especially be administered to patients over 55 years old who have difficulty using ACE inhibitors. It is used for lowering the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death due to cardiovascular diseases in patients with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, or transient ischemic attacks, or those with severe diabetes leading to damage to target organs. Therefore, it is effective in managing hypertension and cardiovascular disease risk.

How to take

Adult dose

Essential hypertension: Telmisartan should be taken orally as 40 mg once daily with water, regardless of meals. Depending on the patient, 20 mg once daily may also be effective, and can be increased to 80 mg once daily if needed. The maximum blood pressure-lowering effect occurs 4-8 weeks after treatment initiation. Cardiovascular disease risk reduction: Take 80 mg orally with water once daily.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn during pregnancy, so discontinuation should occur immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Patients with allergies to this drug or its components, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, patients with severe liver impairment, patients with hereditary angioedema, and patients with certain kidney disorders should not use this medication. Elderly patients, patients with high potassium levels, liver impairment, certain heart diseases, and reduced kidney function should use this medication with caution. While taking this medication, various adverse reactions may occur, including headache, dizziness, cough, dyspepsia, skin rash, muscle pain, and low blood pressure. Patients should consult a doctor if symptoms are severe or persistent. Immediate discontinuation of the medication and assistance from healthcare providers is required if symptoms of angioedema, severe hyperkalemia, worsening kidney function, shock, or liver dysfunction occur. The effectiveness of this medication may increase when taken with other antihypertensive drugs, so it is essential to inform healthcare providers if other medications are being taken. Additionally, the risk of worsening kidney function or hyperkalemia may increase when certain medications are used together, necessitating regular blood pressure and blood tests. It is advisable not to take this medication within 24 hours prior to surgery, and caution should be exercised during driving or operating machinery due to the risk of dizziness or fainting. This medication contains sorbitol, so patients with fructose intolerance should avoid it. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication, and breastfeeding women are also advised to avoid it. Children under 18 years old are not recommended to take this medication, as safety and efficacy have not been established. In case of overdose, symptoms such as low blood pressure, dizziness, and acute kidney failure may occur, necessitating immediate medical attention.
