This medication helps control hypertension in patients with essential hypertension. Additionally, it reduces the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular disease-related mortality in patients with a history of cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, and stroke, or in high-risk diabetic patients unable to use ACE inhibitors. Thus, it protects the overall cardiovascular health of the patients and effectively reduces risk. In this regard, this medication plays a very important role in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and the management of hypertension.

How to take

Adult dose

1. Essential Hypertension Adults: Telmisartan should be administered orally once a day at a dose of 40 mg with water and can be taken regardless of meals. Depending on the patient, 20 mg once a day may be effective. If necessary, the dose may be increased to 80 mg once a day. When increasing the dose, the maximum antihypertensive effect appears after 4 to 8 weeks of treatment. 2. Risk of Cardiovascular Disease

Precautions

This medication can cause serious damage to the fetus and newborn, especially during pregnancy; therefore, it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. This medication should not be used in patients with known allergies to this drug or its components, pregnant women, nursing mothers, patients with severe liver impairment, or hereditary angioedema. Elderly patients or those with hyperkalemia, liver disease, heart valve disease, or kidney impairment should use this medication with caution, and it is essential to ensure that blood pressure does not drop too low. During the course of taking this medication, various side effects such as infection, headache, dizziness, cough, abdominal pain, skin rash, myalgia, and renal function abnormalities may occur; if any unusual symptoms arise, immediate consultation with a physician is required. Especially, if symptoms of angioedema such as swelling of the face, lips, or tongue occur, the use of this medication should be stopped immediately, and appropriate treatment should be sought. This medication may affect renal function, so regular checks of kidney function and electrolyte levels in the blood are necessary, and if symptoms of hypotension appear, prompt treatment should be obtained. When taking it with other specific antihypertensive medications, diuretics, lithium, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, etc., there may be interactions, so it should be taken after consulting with a doctor. This medication is not recommended for nursing mothers, and it is advisable to discontinue breastfeeding while taking it. Safety and efficacy have not been established for children under 18, so it is better not to use it in this age group. In case of overdose, hypotension, dizziness, acute renal failure, etc., may occur, so one must seek medical attention immediately for appropriate treatment. This medication should be stored in a tightly closed container to avoid exposure to air and moisture, and it is preferable to open the package right before taking it. Caution is advised while driving or operating dangerous machinery during use due to the risk of dizziness or fainting.
