This medication is used for gastrointestinal diseases such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is also administered to prevent Mendelson's syndrome before anesthesia and helps in treating ulcers after surgery. It is effective in treating gastric and duodenal ulcers caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). This drug improves and treats symptoms of related diseases by regulating gastric acid secretion.

How to take

Adult dose

Generally, take 2 tablets orally, twice daily, regardless of meals, once in the morning and once before bedtime. 1) Gastric and duodenal ulcers: administer 2 tablets, twice daily, or administer 4 tablets once daily before bedtime. For patients with duodenal ulcers, 4 tablets can be taken twice daily, once in the morning and before bedtime. The same applies for ulcers due to NSAID administration or long-term administration. For recurrent ulcer patients.

Precautions

This drug should not be used in patients with poor kidney function or those receiving dialysis. Patients who have experienced an allergic reaction to this drug or its components should avoid administration. If there is a history of acute porphyria, this drug should not be used as it may worsen symptoms. It is safest to avoid administration in patients who have undergone upper gastrointestinal surgery, pregnant women, or women of childbearing potential, and in premature or newborn infants. Patients on a restricted potassium diet should also avoid using this drug. Patients with impaired liver function, those with a history of drug allergy, elderly patients, and those with a history of kidney dysfunction should use this drug cautiously. When taken with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, particularly in the elderly or patients with a history of peptic ulcers, regular monitoring of their condition is necessary. This drug may mask symptoms of gastric cancer, so patients with gastric ulcers or those with new or changing dyspepsia in middle-aged or older patients should have malignancy ruled out before administration. Patients with Helicobacter pylori-associated gastric and duodenal ulcers should also undergo therapy to eradicate the bacteria. Caution is needed when administering this drug to severely ill patients in intensive care, those with hypophosphatemia, and those with difficulty swallowing. Very rarely, severe allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock may occur, so if any abnormal symptoms arise, administration should be stopped immediately and medical personnel informed. If allergic symptoms such as skin rash, hives, fever, and difficulty breathing occur, administration should be stopped. Blood tests may show decreased white blood cell or platelet counts, so if symptoms like fatigue, bleeding, or fever appear, immediate testing and treatment are necessary. If symptoms of liver dysfunction or jaundice, or severe abdominal pain occur, administration of the drug should be stopped and consultation with a physician is required. As it can cause arrhythmias, any symptoms of irregular heartbeat should be observed closely. Gastrointestinal side effects may include nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, and abdominal bloating, and stool may darken but this does not require treatment. Neurological symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, seizures, and insomnia may occur; if these symptoms develop, consult medical personnel. Endocrine symptoms such as gynecomastia or decreased sexual function have been rarely reported, but the causal relationship is unclear. Joint pain or muscle pain, and rarely severe muscle damage may occur; if abnormal symptoms are present, administration should be discontinued. Skin changes such as rashes, hair loss, or itching have been reported, so caution should be exercised in the event of skin changes. Long-term use of this medication is not recommended, and if there is no therapeutic effect, it should be switched to another medication. In elderly patients or those with chronic lung disease, diabetes, or weakened immunity, there may be an increased risk of pneumonia. If dizziness or drowsiness occurs while taking this medication, driving or operating hazardous machinery should be avoided. This drug may interact with other medications, so it is essential to inform medical personnel of any other medications being taken, and certain medications should be administered with intervals. Pregnant or nursing women should avoid using this medication. Safety in pediatric patients has not been established, and its use is not recommended. During testing, this drug may affect urine protein test results, necessitating the use of special methods for accurate tests. In case of overdose, emergency measures such as vomiting or gastric lavage should be taken, and if needed, the drug can be removed by blood dialysis. This drug can reduce gastric acid secretion, potentially promoting the proliferation of bacteria in the stomach; therefore, regular examinations, including ocular exams, are needed with long-term use.
