Reduction of risks of myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medicine helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In particular, it reduces the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults aged 55 and older or those with risk factors such as smoking, hypertension, low HDL cholesterol levels, or family history. It is also effective in patients with type 2 diabetes who have risk factors for coronary artery disease. For patients already diagnosed with coronary artery disease, it reduces the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular interventions, hospitalizations due to congestive heart failure, and angina. Additionally, it is used as a dietary supplement to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with hyperlipidemia and increase HDL cholesterol levels. This medicine is also effective in treating certain familial hypercholesterolemia in pediatric patients. Overall, this medicine is used to improve heart and vascular health.
Start with a dosage of 10 mg once a day, and for patients requiring greater reduction of LDL cholesterol levels, it can be started at 20 mg or 40 mg once a day. The dosage range is 10 to 80 mg once daily. It should be individualized based on treatment goals and patient response, and lipid levels should be analyzed within 2 to 4 weeks after starting therapy to adjust dosage accordingly. The treatment goal is to lower LDL cholesterol levels, so it is recommended to use LDL cholesterol levels for evaluating treatment initiation and response. However, if LDL cholesterol levels cannot be monitored, total cholesterol levels can be used to monitor treatment responses. In patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the dosage range is 10 to 80 mg once daily and is administered in conjunction with other lipid-lowering therapies (e.g., LDL apheresis) or if such lipid-lowering therapies are unavailable.
For pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 years with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, start with a dosage of 10 mg daily, with a maximum dosage of 20 mg daily. The dosage should be adjusted every 4 weeks or more.
