Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In particular, it lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with multiple risk factors for coronary heart disease and patients with type 2 diabetes. It also reduces the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, the need for vascular interventions, hospitalization for congestive heart failure, and angina in patients with coronary heart disease. In the treatment of hyperlipidemia, it improves cholesterol and other lipid levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, and is effective for certain dyslipidemia patients who do not respond to dietary therapy. Additionally, it helps lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels in pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. This medication is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and improve hyperlipidemia.
Atorvastatin can be taken at any time of the day, regardless of meals. The recommended initial dose for hyperlipidemia is 10 mg once daily, but if greater LDL cholesterol reduction is needed, it may start at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. Doses can be adjusted within the range of 10–80 mg once daily, and lipid levels should be analyzed at intervals of 2-4 weeks to adjust the dose accordingly. The treatment goal is to lower LDL cholesterol levels; therefore, it is recommended to monitor LDL cholesterol levels during initiation and evaluation of treatment response.
For pediatric patients (ages 10-17) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily, with a maximum dose of 20 mg once daily. Dose adjustments should be made at intervals of at least 4 weeks.
