Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. It helps to prevent myocardial infarction, stroke, the need for vascular revascularization, angina, and hospitalization for congestive heart failure in adults with multiple risk factors or in patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, it is used as an adjunct to diet to lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo-B levels, and triglyceride levels in patients with hyperlipidemia, while increasing HDL cholesterol levels. It is also effective in pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, particularly in cases with high LDL cholesterol levels and a family history of heart disease. Overall, this medication is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and improve cholesterol management.
For the treatment of hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg atorvastatin once daily, and if greater LDL cholesterol reduction is needed, treatment may begin with 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. Doses can be administered within a range of 10 to 80 mg once daily. Initial and maintenance doses should be individualized based on therapeutic goals and patient characteristics, with dose adjustments made based on lipid levels analyzed at 2 to 4-week intervals.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (ages 10-17) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily, with a maximum dose of 20 mg once daily. The dosing can be adjusted according to treatment goals.
