This medication is used for gastrointestinal diseases such as ulcers of the stomach and duodenum, gastritis, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is also effective for conditions where excessive gastric acid secretion is a problem, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It helps prevent postoperative ulcers and treats gastric ulcers caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is used to prevent Mendelson's syndrome when given before anesthesia. It is indicated for the treatment and prevention of various diseases related to the stomach.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with impaired kidney function or those undergoing dialysis. It should also not be administered to patients with allergies to this drug or its components, or those with a history of acute porphyria. It is safe not to use in patients who have undergone upper gastrointestinal surgery, pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, and in premature or neonatal infants. Patients who must restrict potassium intake should not take this medication. It should be used cautiously in patients with liver dysfunction or a history of drug allergies, elderly patients, and those with a history of kidney impairment. Patients taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should have regular examinations, especially elderly patients or those with a history of peptic ulcers. This medication may mask symptoms of stomach cancer, so patients with gastric ulcers or those experiencing new or altered dyspeptic symptoms who are middle-aged or older should have malignancy ruled out before treatment. For patients with gastric or duodenal ulcers infected with Helicobacter pylori, therapy to eradicate the bacteria should be administered concurrently. Care should be taken when administering to severely ill patients in an intensive care unit, patients with hypophosphatemia, or those who have difficulty swallowing. During treatment with this medication, allergic reactions or shock symptoms, skin rashes, breathing difficulties, blood abnormalities, liver dysfunction, cardiac arrhythmias, gastrointestinal symptoms, neurological disturbances, myalgia, skin abnormalities, and other side effects may occur, so if abnormal symptoms appear, immediate consultation with a physician is necessary. Do not take this medication long-term, and monitor symptoms and blood, liver, and kidney function periodically during treatment. Elderly patients or those with chronic lung disease, diabetes, or weakened immune systems may be at an increased risk of pneumonia when taking this medication, so care is warranted. If dizziness or drowsiness occurs, avoid driving or operating dangerous machinery. This medication may affect the absorption or metabolism of other drugs, so dosage adjustments or discontinuation of concurrently taken medications may be necessary; inform your doctor or pharmacist. Particular caution should be taken regarding interactions with this medication and specific antibiotics, anticoagulants, anticonvulsants, etc., so intervals between doses should be adjusted or avoided. It is safest not to take this medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Safety and efficacy have not been established for pediatric patients, so its use in children is not recommended. This medication may cause false-positive results in urine protein tests, so care is needed during testing. In the case of overdose, emergency treatment such as vomiting or gastric lavage may be necessary, and if needed, blood dialysis can be performed to remove it. This medication reduces gastric acid secretion and may promote bacterial growth in the gastrointestinal tract, so ophthalmological exams may be necessary with long-term use.
