This medication can cause a rare but serious side effect called lactic acidosis, and should not be used in patients with poor kidney function or conditions such as severe infections, dehydration, or acute heart disease. It should also not be administered to patients who are allergic to any of its components, or to those with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or diabetic coma. Patients with weak kidney function or the elderly should regularly monitor their kidney function while using this medication, and it is strictly prohibited in cases of severely impaired kidney function. This medication may cause hypoglycemia, so caution should be exercised for symptoms of hypoglycemia when used in combination with insulin or sulfonylureas, and the dosage of these medications may need to be adjusted if necessary. Skin conditions such as acute pancreatitis or bullous pemphigoid may occur, so if abdominal pain or blistering on the skin occurs, consult a doctor immediately. Since vitamin B12 levels may decrease with long-term use, it is recommended to check vitamin B12 status through blood tests during prolonged treatment. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as those who are breastfeeding, are advised not to use this medication, and should consult a doctor if planning to become pregnant.
