Improvement of hypertension and diabetic kidney disease
This medication is used to lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension, and it also helps prevent and treat kidney disease specifically in patients with type 2 diabetes. By effectively managing hypertension, it can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and kidney complications. Therefore, it is used to improve kidney problems accompanied by hypertension and diabetes.
This medication can be taken regardless of meals, but it is recommended to take it at the same time every day. For adults with hypertension, an initial and maintenance dose of 50 mg orally once daily as losartan potassium is recommended. If the therapeutic effect is insufficient, the dose can be divided and taken twice daily, or the dose can be increased up to 100 mg once daily. For patients with kidney disease associated with hypertension and type 2 diabetes, the usual dose is once daily.
For children and adolescents aged 6 years and older, weighing 20 kg to 50 kg, a dose of 25 mg once daily is recommended, which can be increased to a maximum of 50 mg once daily. For children weighing over 50 kg
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn if taken during pregnancy, so it must be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Patients who are allergic to this medication, have severely impaired liver function, are pregnant, or may become pregnant should not take this medication. Additionally, patients with certain genetic lactose intolerance or a history of angioedema should not take this medication. Elderly patients, those with impaired kidney function, and patients with hyperkalemia should use this medication with caution, as there is a risk of blood pressure dropping too low. This medication may cause various side effects such as muscle cramps, dizziness, cough, and indigestion; if symptoms are severe, consult a doctor. Especially, serious allergic reactions such as angioedema may rarely occur, so if there is swelling of the face or lips or difficulty breathing, immediate treatment should be sought. It is important to regularly check liver and kidney function while taking this medication to ensure there are no abnormalities. If taken with other blood pressure medications or potassium supplements, the severity of side effects can increase, so it must be reported to the doctor. Grapefruit juice can reduce the effectiveness of this medication, so it is best to avoid it while taking this medication. This medication is not recommended for breastfeeding women, and breastfeeding should be discontinued while taking this medication. It has not been confirmed to be safe for children, especially those under 6 or with very weak kidney function, so it should not be administered to them. Dizziness or drowsiness may occur while taking this medication, so caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery. In case of overdose, blood pressure can drop too low and heart rhythm may become irregular, so immediate medical assistance should be sought. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers for safety.
