Summary

Main use
Treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers and gastritis (reflux esophagitis, NSAID-induced ulcers, etc.)
Who takes it
Adults
Adult dose
Typically administer 2 tablets orally twice a day, morning and at bedtime, regardless of meals. 1) Gastric/Duodenal Ulcer: Administer 2 tablets twice daily or 4 tablets once daily at bedtime. Particularly for patients with duodenal ulcers, administering 4 tablets twice daily, morning and at bedtime, can achieve a higher treatment rate. For ulcers caused by NSAID administration or in cases of NSAID long-term use, the dosage is the same for prophylaxis of gastric and duodenal ulcers. Typically, diseases caused by NSAID use heal within 8 weeks, although healing time may be prolonged in some patients. For recurrent ulcer patients who showed excellent efficacy with short-term therapy, use 2 tablets once daily at bedtime for maintenance therapy. 2) Reflux Esophagitis: Administer 2 tablets twice a day for 8 weeks or 4 tablets once daily at bedtime. For severe reflux esophagitis patients, the dose can be increased to 4 tablets four times a day. 3) Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: Start with an initial dose of 2 tablets three times a day, with the option to increase as necessary. For severe cases, a physician may prescribe up to 6 g of ranitidine per day as directed. 4) Peptic ulcer, acute stress ulcer, and upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to acute gastric mucosal lesions: Once oral administration is feasible, switch from injection to oral administration of 2 tablets twice daily. 5) Pre-anesthesia dosing (to prevent Mendelson's syndrome): Administer 2 tablets 2 hours prior to anesthesia induction. It is also beneficial to administer 2 tablets the night before surgery.

How to take

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients undergoing dialysis treatment or those with kidney dysfunction. Patients who have had allergies to this drug or its components should also avoid it. Caution is advised for patients with a history of the rare condition acute porphyria as this medication may exacerbate symptoms. It is not recommended for patients who have undergone gastrointestinal surgery, pregnant women, women of childbearing potential, and premature or newborn infants. Patients on dietary restrictions limiting potassium intake should refrain from using this medication. Caution should be exercised in patients with liver dysfunction or a history of drug allergies, particularly in elderly individuals and those with a history of kidney issues. When taken in conjunction with NSAIDs, gastrointestinal status should be monitored regularly. This medication may mask symptoms of stomach cancer, so gastric ulcer patients or middle-aged patients with newly developed dyspepsia should confirm malignancy prior to treatment. If Helicobacter pylori is present, it is important to undergo treatment to eliminate the bacteria. Special care is needed for patients in intensive care units, those with low phosphate levels, or patients who have difficulty swallowing. Severe allergic reactions, such as anaphylactic shock, may occur infrequently during the use of this medication, so if symptoms appear, administration should be discontinued immediately, and treatment should be sought. Discontinue use if hypersensitivity reactions such as skin rash, urticaria, or difficulty breathing occur. Rare side effects may include a decrease in blood cell count, liver dysfunction, arrhythmia, gastrointestinal symptoms, dizziness, drowsiness, and confusion, and patients should consult a physician if any abnormal symptoms occur. Avoid long-term use and only take the minimum required dose, while closely monitoring treatment progress. Caution is necessary for elderly patients or those with chronic lung disease or diabetes, as the risk of pneumonia may increase. If dizziness or drowsiness occurs, avoid driving or operating dangerous machinery. This medication may interact with other drugs, so notify your physician of any other medications you are taking. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should refrain from using this medication. Safety and efficacy have not been established in children, so its use is not recommended. In case of overdose, emergency treatment such as vomiting or gastric lavage may be necessary. This medication reduces gastric acid secretion and may promote bacterial proliferation in the gastrointestinal tract, so regular check-ups, including ophthalmologic assessments, may be required during long-term use.
