Treatment of essential hypertension and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used to control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension, helping to maintain cardiovascular health by managing blood pressure. It is also effective in reducing the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death due to cardiovascular disease in high-risk patients aged 55 and older who are intolerant to ACE inhibitors. This medication is particularly indicated for high-risk diabetic patients with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, stroke, transient ischemic attack, or end-organ damage. Therefore, this drug is useful for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and preventing serious cardiovascular events. Overall, this treatment is recommended for patients who present with hypertension along with cardiovascular risk conditions.
1. Essential hypertension Adults should take 40 mg of Telmisartan orally once a day with water, regardless of meals. Depending on the patient, 20 mg once daily may also be effective, and if needed, the dose may be increased up to 80 mg once daily. Dose increases will show the maximum blood pressure-lowering effect 4 to 8 weeks after starting treatment. 2. Reduction of cardiovascular disease risk Adults
This medication may cause serious harm to the fetus during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters, so if pregnancy is confirmed, administration should be stopped immediately. This medication should not be administered to specific patient populations, such as those with drug allergies, pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients with severe liver impairment or cholestasis, patients with hereditary angioedema, and patients with severe renal impairment. Elderly patients or those with hyperkalemia, mild liver impairment, heart valve disease, or ischemic heart disease should use this medication with special caution. During the administration of this drug, various adverse reactions, such as hypotension, hyperkalemia, decreased renal function, allergic reactions, and abnormal liver function, may occur, so symptoms should be carefully monitored. Especially if symptoms of angioedema, such as swelling of the face, lips, or tongue occur, administration should be stopped immediately and medical advice should be sought. When administered to patients with reduced renal function, it is important to regularly monitor potassium and creatinine levels in the blood. Due to the risk of hypotension, patients who are on diuretics or have inadequate salt intake must correct their condition before administration. Interactions may occur when taking with other antihypertensive drugs or certain medications, so other medications being taken should be disclosed to healthcare providers. Caution is necessary when driving or operating machinery due to the risk of dizziness or fainting. This medication contains sorbitol, making it unsuitable for patients with fructose intolerance. It is not recommended for children, especially those under 18 years of age, as safety and efficacy have not been established. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, dizziness, and acute renal failure may occur, necessitating immediate medical assistance. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children and should not be transferred to another container.
