Treatment of hypertension and kidney disease (in patients with type 2 diabetes)
This medicine is used for the treatment of hypertension, particularly effective for patients with type 2 diabetes complicated by hypertension-related kidney disease. It helps protect kidney function and reduce the occurrence of complications by controlling blood pressure. Therefore, it aids in the management of both blood pressure and kidney health.
This medication can be taken regardless of meals, but it is recommended to take it at the same time each day. For adults with hypertension, the initial and maintenance dose is recommended as 50 mg once daily as Losartan Potassium. The maximum antihypertensive effect appears 3 to 6 weeks after treatment initiation. If treatment effects are insufficient, the same dose may be divided and administered twice daily, or it may be increased to a maximum of 100 mg once daily if necessary.
In children and adolescents aged 6 years and older weighing between 20 kg and less than 50 kg, the recommended dose is 25 mg once daily, and it may be increased to a maximum of 50 mg once daily based on blood pressure response.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus when taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters; therefore, it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Blood pressure and kidney function should be regularly monitored, especially during initial dosing, as there is a risk of too low blood pressure or worsening kidney function. This medication may interact with other drugs. Caution is required when used in conjunction with potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium supplements, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, lithium, etc. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid this medication; if it must be taken, breastfeeding should be discontinued.
