Treatment of hypertension and kidney disease (in patients with type 2 diabetes)
This medication is used for the treatment of hypertension. It is particularly effective in preventing and treating kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes who have hypertension. It helps manage renal complications due to hypertension and diabetes, supporting healthy kidney function. This medication lowers blood pressure and prevents kidney damage, contributing to overall health improvement.
This medication can be taken regardless of meals, but it is recommended to take it at the same time every day. 1. Hypertension The initial and maintenance dose is recommended to be 50 mg orally once daily as Losartan Potassium. The maximum blood pressure-lowering effect appears 3 to 6 weeks after starting treatment. If the treatment effect is insufficient, the same dose may be administered orally twice daily or increased to a maximum of 100 mg once daily if necessary.
Children and adolescents aged 6 years and older (1) Weight 20 kg or more but less than 50 kg: 25 mg once daily, may be increased to a maximum of 50 mg. (2) Weight 50 kg or more: 50 mg once daily.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus, especially when taken during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy; therefore, it should not be taken by pregnant women or women who may become pregnant. Additionally, it should not be administered to patients with hypersensitivity to this medication, severe liver impairment, a history of hereditary angioedema, or primary hyperaldosteronism. Elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, liver impairment, and cardiovascular disease should use this medication cautiously, as there is a risk of significantly lowering blood pressure or worsening kidney function. This medication may cause side effects such as muscle cramps, dizziness, and upper respiratory infections, and in rare cases, serious adverse reactions such as angioedema, liver function abnormalities, and rhabdomyolysis may occur, so any unusual symptoms should be reported to healthcare professionals immediately. Particularly, this medication can increase serum potassium levels, so it should be avoided with potassium supplements or potassium-containing medications, and dizziness or fainting may occur due to its blood pressure-lowering effects, so caution is needed when driving or operating machinery. It is advisable for pregnant and nursing women to avoid this medication; if pregnancy is confirmed, the medication should be discontinued immediately, and a doctor should be consulted. This medication should not be used in pediatric patients under 6 years of age or patients with severely impaired kidney function. In cases of overdose, hypotension and tachycardia may occur, and immediate medical treatment should be sought if symptoms arise. Routine checks of blood pressure and kidney function, as well as electrolyte levels, should be conducted while taking this medication, and appropriate measures should be taken if abnormalities are detected. It is recommended not to take this medication with grapefruit juice, and due to potential interactions with other medications, patients should consult their doctor or pharmacist if they are taking other drugs.
Angioedema (swelling of the larynx/glottis that may cause airway obstruction, swelling of the face/lips/pharynx/tongue), urticaria, dyspnea, generalized flush, edema, liver function abnormalities (hepatitis, acute hepatitis, fulminant hepatitis), renal failure, acute renal failure, severe hypotension, syncope, loss of consciousness, angioedema, severe hypotension, acute renal failure, cerebrovascular accident (CVA), seizures, confusion, vision changes, paralysis, transitory associated with blood pressure lowering.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly closed container to avoid exposure to air or moisture. It is best to maintain a storage temperature between 1 and 30 degrees Celsius. Proper storage will help maintain the medication's effectiveness for a long time.
